Summary:
The Doctor and Rose follow a capsule through the time vortex, which has the colour for emergencies: mauve. Their chase brings them into London in 1941 at the height of the London Blitz. Rose and the Doctor are separated when he wants to ask about the capsule and Rose follows a child with a gas mask. Soon she dangles from a balloon over London but she is saved by Captain Jack Harkness who doesn't come out of this time too. He is a time agent and wants to make a deal with Rose. They search for the Doctor who has met homeless children and wonders who this strange child with the gas mask is. He manages to get into the hospital where all infected people are and there he meets up with Rose and Jack. Can they get out of the hospital?
"The Empty Child" is the first part of a two-parter and the first time we meet Captain Jack Harkness. Jack comes from the 51st century and has worked as a time agent. Later on this character gets its own series with Torchwood. The Doctor is a bit jealous when he sees Rose and Jack together and also when Jack has this big sonic canon and he only has his sonic screwdriver. I love that "Bananas are good" line, which makes me smile every time. Jack was a good invention from Steven Moffat's brain and we know that he has some fabulous ideas. An interesting first part and you really want to know what's happening after the cliffhanger. Who is this strange child and why is it searching for his mummy?
