Quotes from "Adrift"

Gwen: Do you think I've changed?
Rhys: Eh?
Gwen: Since I joined Torchwood, am I different?
Rhys: Why?
Gwen: It's just something Andy said. Okay, let me just tell you this one thing, okay?
Rhys: Okay, go on.
Gwen: He still fancies me. (Rhys laughs) Don't laugh, Rhys. That's why he didn't come to the wedding.
Rhys: Bloody hell, poor sod.
Gwen: Oi! I'm a very sexy lady and you are a very lucky man. Just remember that, okay?
(starts removing clothing)
Rhys: We're not going to talk about kids tonight are, we?
Gwen: We could do some practising.

PC Andy: How's Rhys? Other than hungry.

Gwen: So, is that it, then? We just sweep it under the carpet?
Owen: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change."
Gwen: Oh, bollocks to serenity!
Owen: For a lovely girl, you've got a very dirty mouth.

Rhys: You save this city. Well done. You save the world. Whatever. What for?
Gwen: Sorry?
Rhys: Why are you doing it? What are you trying to protect? What are you fighting for?
Gwen: Because if I don't...
Rhys: Shut up, I'm talking now, right? You do it so people can live their lives. And there's nothing more important than that. Falling in love, getting married, buying flats, having kids or not. But real life, that's what you're protecting. And if you're starting to think that your shit is more important than real life, then we're not going to last very long here, love.

(Gwen walks in on Ianto and Jack having sex)
Gwen: Ianto, hi, I'm sorry. I didn't realise...
Ianto: It doesn't matter.
Gwen: And I wouldn't have come in if I'd known.
Jack: Always room for one more. We could have used you an hour ago for a naked hide-and-seek.
Ianto: He cheats. He always cheats.

Quotes from "Captain Jack Harkness"

Tosh: My grandfather’s eighty-eighth birthday today.
Jack: I thought you’d gone to all this trouble for me.
Tosh: Eighty eight is a joyous year for the Japanese. I’m off to London to watch grown men throw rice.
Jack: You can get that in the Balti after stop-tap.

Tosh: Why does that man have your name? I'm lost enough here without you holding back on me!
Jack: It's not my name. It's his. I took his. But I didn't realise he was...so hot!
Tosh: Jack?
Jack: I know too much.
Tosh: Then share.
Jack: You wouldn't want that, trust me.

Jack: I went to war when I was a boy. I was with my best friend. We got caught crossing the border over enemy lines. They tortured him, not me, because he was weaker. They made me watch him die. And they let me go.
Original Jack: Who were they?
Jack: The worst possible creatures you can imagine. I persuaded him to join up. I said it would be an adventure. He hadn't lived.
Original Jack: Have any of us?

Jack: (about Captain Harkness) Tomorrow’s their last training exercise. Just another day. They go out on a sortie and are surprised by two formations of Messerschmitts. He destroys three of the enemy. His men listen to his whoops of joy over the radio. Then it all goes quiet. He can’t bail out because his whole plane is on fire. But his men all make it back to safety.

Owen: Good job you're a crap shot.
Ianto: I was aiming for your shoulder.

Quotes from "Combat"

Owen: Trust me, the bigger the crowd, the more alone I feel.

Jack: You know what they used these warehouses for during World War II? Storing the bodies of dead GIs. Sometimes you can know too much history.

Caller: Don’t interfere in things you don’t understand.
Jack: Oh, I understand this better than you. ‘Cause I know how this is going to end. We’re gonna hunt you down. We’re going to ensure that you’re punished for what happened here. And we’re going to make you surrender that creature that you kidnapped. Is that clear enough?

Gwen: The shittiest part about being a police officer and I can't get away from it. (Owen ignores her) Thank you for your kind words of support.
Owen: What do you want me to say? She'll be all right in the end?
Gwen: "You can always count on Owen, to make you feel better." Tosh mentioned you and Diane. Did you...
Owen: .I didn't want her to go. She went.
Gwen: Why are we still doing this, me and you?
Owen: Fine. Let's not. I was getting bored of your fuck-tricks anyway.
Gwen: You can be such a wanker sometimes Owen, do you know that?
Owen: I do, as a matter of fact!

Jack: In your absence, Toshiko’s had a great idea.
Owen: Well, it had to happen sooner or later.

Tosh: You want to release a Weevil in the middle of Cardiff!
Jack: Not exactly in the middle, a little to the side.

Mark Lynch: You work yourself stupid, get a house, a car, plasma screen. You end up with a workforce, people there specifically to look after your every whim. You’re officially successful, but what does it bring? Nothing. Success has no worth other than itself. Seriously, I could live without all this. It doesn’t define me.

Mark Lynch: Ask yourself, what’s the point of your life?
Owen: Mark, mate, I only came here for a beer.
Mark Lynch: There’s so much more, if you know where to look.
Owen: Is that right?
Mark Lynch: It’s closer than you think. Something’s coming. Out there, in the darkness, something is coming.

Mark Lynch: (about a Weevil) I think it’s us, Owen. You and me, in a thousand years time. This is what we become when all we have left is our rage.

Owen: Who are these blokes?
Mark Lynch: Same as us. Ordinary blokes just trying to find meaning in a world that doesn’t have anyone.
Owen: You don’t really believe that, do you?
Mark Lynch: We’re the dispossessed now, Owen. All the certainties our fathers had are gone. We’re a generation of no faith. In society, in religion, or in life. All we can do is reduce ourselves to the basics.

Owen: So these guys are paying to put their lives at risk?
Mark Lynch: It's the ultimate extreme sport. Too much disposable income, not enough meaning,. That's us.
Owen: So what about Dan Hodges, Mark?
Mark Lynch: He wouldn't come out. Just stood in the middle of the cage and let it maul him. I think he got in there and he realised he didn't want to live enough. He surrendered. None of us could get to him in time.
Owen: And still you all come back.
Mark Lynch: Well, what else is there?

Mark Lynch: When you get in there, when you’re up close with it, take a look into its eyes.
Owen: Open the door!
Mark Lynch: It’s like looking into the darkest recesses of your own soul.

Only Human by Gareth Roberts

"Only Human" features the Ninth Doctor, Rose Tyler and Jack Harkness.
The Ninth Doctor travels with Rose and Jack to modern-day London to investigate a time disturbance. There they find a Neanderthal Man and try to bring him back into his time. When this doesn't work, the Doctor and Rose travel back in time, while Jack tries his best to integrate Das, the Neanderthal Man, into the community of London. The Doctor and Rose discover strange humans from the future who are now living in the past. They are there for an experiment and watch the first steps of humanity but these people don't seem very human anymore. The people from Osterberg don't have real feelings anymore because they suppress their feelings with drugs. Soon, the Doctor finds out that people go missing and that there is a strange monster down in the caves of Osterberg. Is he able to save the people around him?

I don't know why but I was a bit disappointed by this book. Maybe this is because I don't really feel a connection to the Ninth Doctor at the moment. The story was interesting and I liked the idea of the different humans all meeting each other in the past but there was somehow some excitement missing. It's nice to have Jack in this book as well and he was so typically himself and it was fun to read how he "trained" Das to fit into modern-day London. The book has many funny moments especially when the different humans come together and the monsters were kind of human too this time. When I think of them though, they are a bit scary and I'm glad that the Doctor managed to kill most of them.
"Only Human" is a good read, I just think a bit more excitement would have been nice.

Quotes from "Out of Time"

(arriving at a grocery store's automatic doors)
Diane Holmes: How did it do that?
Ianto: It's automatic. It knows you're there.
Diane Holmes: But how?
Ianto: There are wave bouncing detectors which emit high frequency radio waves and then look for reflections...
Diane Holmes: Bananas!
Ianto: Of course, bananas are far more interesting.

John Ellis: Look at all this. We’d just come rationing in ’53.
Ianto: Yeah, sorry. We are a consumer society.
John Ellis: It’s bloody fantastic!

(finding a gentleman's magazine)
Ianto: Welcome to the world of scantily-clad celebrities.
John Ellis: But, there could be children around here.
Ianto: She's a children's TV presenter.

Owen: I've, uh, I've been reading up on you. England to Australia in four days, 1952, that is impressive.
Diane Holmes: Yeah, terrible wind across the Bengal Bay.
Owen: Something you ate?

Diane Holmes: So what other strides have women made?
Owen: Well, under "strange but true", how about this? You don’t have to have sex to have kids any more.
Diane Holmes: What? How come?
Owen: Get yourself inseminated with a sort of syringe. Cheery little process. Seriously, men donate sperm anonymously. A little shuffle into a pot at a sperm bank. And they say romance is dead.
Diane Holmes: Oh, come on, I wasn’t born yesterday.
Owen: No, but for a bird who's going on 90, you look pretty hot.

Diane Holmes: Do you have a girlfriend?
Owen: No.
Diane Holmes: So who do all those beauty products belong to?
Owen: Uh, me, actually.
Diane Holmes: No?
Owen: Oi, real men can moisturise too, you know.

Owen: I always thought the '50s were uptight, sexually repressed, you know.
Diane Holmes: You didn't invent it, you know.

Jack: There's no puzzle to solve, no enemy to fight, just three lost people who've somehow become our responsibility.

(Jack stops John from killing himself)
Jack: You can’t just throw it away, not without trying!
John Ellis: I’m not as strong as you! You don’t understand.
Jack: I do. I was born in the future. Lived in your past. My time has gone, too.
John Ellis: Why are you doing this? Speaking to me in bloody riddles, keeping me here when my wife is dead, my son is a shell...
Jack: John, you’re still young. You can get work, make friends, start a family.
John Ellis: I did all that, Jack. Years ago. When I was meant to.

Jack: I can’t leave you here.
John Ellis: Then we’ll wait. The sun will rise, we’ll have some breakfast, take a walk...
Jack: Yes. A new day.
John Ellis: And I’ll suffer it all and smile and wag my tail. And then, as soon as your back is turned, I’ll make sure I do it properly. Because I want to die.
Jack: You don’t get reunited, John. It just goes black.
John Ellis: How do you know?
Jack: I died once.
John Ellis: Who are you?
Jack: A man, like you, out of his time, alone and scared.
John Ellis: How do you cope?
Jack: It’s just bearable. It has to be. I don’t have a choice.
John Ellis: But I do. If you want to help me, then let me go with some dignity. Don’t condemn me to live.

Owen: I don't know if I can do this anymore. This isn't how it works for me. I've slept with enough women, I've done the fuck buddies thing. This is not it. I can't concentrate. All I see is you. All I can think about is what you're wearing, what you're thinking, what your... what your face looks like when you come. It's been, what, a week? And, uh... it's like, I don’t know, when I'm not with you, erm, I'm out of focus. How have you done this to me? I'm scared. I'm fucking scared.
Diane Holmes: I love you, too.

Diane Holmes: The thing about love is that you’re always at its mercy.

Owen: I’ll come with you.
Diane Holmes: I fly solo, Owen. I go faster and further than others.
Owen: You have no idea how this Rift works. You could end up anywhere.
Diane Holmes: That’s the beauty of it.
Owen: It’s too dangerous!
Diane Holmes: It’s what I do.

Quotes from "Random Shoes"

(Opening Voiceover)
Eugene Jones: The speed of light is 299,792,458 metres per second. Pain travels through the body at 350 feet per second. Even a sneeze can reach a hundred miles per hour. And as for life? Well... that just bloody whizzes by.

(Voiceover)
Eugene: Now I had the eye and what I realised was if it fell from the sky, it probably, no, no, it almost certainly belonged to an alien. That was the night Dad went away. But it was okay, because I had the eye and the possibility of an alien encounter. I mean, if you leave something really important behind, you come back and get it. Don’t you? God, I wanted that alien to come back and claim his eye more than I wanted anything in my life. I worked out the possible provenance, the lifeform and galaxy, planetary escape velocities, launch windows, necessary fuel capacities and then, I waited.

Gwen: What was (Eugene) doing out on that road?
Owen: Oh, fuck knows. Categorising chevrons? He was a geek.

Gwen: Do you think Eugene committed suicide?
Tosh: There was a road accident and there was no alien involvement
Gwen: See, I'm not so sure because... something seems really odd. I mean I just, I just feel that there's something going on.
Owen: Marvelous, thank you for that Disney moment, now who's making the tea?
Gwen: Yeah well I suppose Eugene's a bit ordinary and local and amateur for you, Owen.
Owen: And why is that only Gwen seems to have a heart, yeah I dunno if you've noticed but the rest of us are human and amazingly we still manage to get on with our jobs

Josh: No disrespect, but Eugene had "loser" written through him like Brighton in a stick of rock. Maybe he just couldn’t live with his... failure.

(Voiceover)
Eugene: Failure? Is that right? Has my life just been one big failure? I mean, maybe I never quite lived up to my early promise as a maths genius but that’s because I was waiting. For the alien to collect his eye and change my life.

Terry: (Eugene) may have been able to square the root of the frigging root, but he couldn't cross the frigging road.

Gwen: What exactly is, uh, a Sixth Eye, I mean, exactly?
Jack: It’s one in the back. Lets you see behind you, where you’ve been. Kind of puts things in perspective. It’s useful, fun, slightly terrifying. That’s why they were in demand.

Josh: I checked the bid history; Mr. C. Blackstaff is a collector of alien ephemera and Nazi memorabilia. Also Beanie Babies. Teeny bit cuckoo, but endearingly rich.

(Voiceover)
Eugene: All those cars. All those lives moving through space. All that humanity whizzing by in a frenzy of burgers and chips, Bank Holiday fun, burst tyres, screaming kids, sudden heart attacks. Now I remember. Apart from a buzzing in my ear, where Josh whacked me, I felt good. I was running across a field on a Saturday morning, the smell of exhaust and banana milkshake, a slight nausea, heart beating too fast 'cause I wasn't that fit; all the stuff that tells you you're alive. By rights, I should be well pissed off. My mates had cheated on me and I didn’t get to meet any aliens. But I realised that when I swallowed the eye at the Happy Cook, I was given a chance to look back on my life and see it for what it really was.

Eugene: You know, twenty-eight is one of those perfect numbers. It’s equal to the sum of its divisors. I’m twenty-eight. I was twenty-eight. I think I’m going to have to go soon, Gwen.

(Voiceover)
Eugene: In an average lifetime, the human heart will beat two million times. You’ll produce over eight thousand gallons of saliva and grow three-hundred-and-fifty miles of hair. You’ll eat the equivalent in weight of six elephants. Oh, isn’t life amazing?

(Voiceover)
Eugene: The average life is full of near misses and absolute hits, of great love and small disasters. It's made up of banana milkshakes, loft insulation, and random shoes. It's dead ordinary and truly truly amazing. What you've got to realise is it's all here now. So breathe deep and swallow it whole because take it from me, life just whizzes by.

Quotes from "They keep killing Suzie"

Swanson: Are you always this dressy, for a murder investigation?
Jack: What, you rather me naked?
Swanson: God help me; the stories are true.

("Torchwood" is written in blood at a murder scene)
Swanson: Looks like somebody wants your attention.
Jack: They’ve got it.

Owen: Still, at least we've got a head start. If it’s someone we’ve pissed off, that narrows it down to, oh, four or five million.
Jack: And that’s just the humans.

Jack: Ianto, how many people have we given amnesia pills to?
Ianto: Two thousand and eight.
Owen: Hey, what if they all become psychotic?
Tosh: Do you have to sound so happy?

Owen: You know, we never gave it a cool name.
Tosh: I thought we called it the Resurrection Gauntlet.
Owen: Cool name.
Ianto: What about...the Risen Mitten?
(Jack and Owen both look less than impressed)
Ianto: I think it's catchy.

Ianto: Amazing. She's a natural - 24 seconds.
Owen: Give Ianto a stopwatch and he's happy.
Ianto: It's the button on the top.

Gwen: Have I got this right? When I die, you get to keep all of my possessions? My whole life's gonna get stashed in a locker?
Jack: Rules and regulations.
Gwen: What if I leave all my stuff to Rhys?
Jack: We'll stash him away too.

Suzie: It's my fault, isn't it? It never bloody stops being my fault. Can't you just let me die?
Jack: You don't get off that easy.

Jack: I had a boyfriend who used to walk into rooms like that. The grand entrance. Got kind of boring. Though he was one of twins, so I put up with it. Twin acrobats. Man, I gotta write that book. Maybe even illustrate it. I can talk for a long time, a very long time…

Suzie: That night, my last night on Earth - so I thought - before I shot myself, I shot Jack right through the head. I killed him, stone dead. And then he just stood up and lived. Am I right? Did that happen? Gwen?
Gwen: Yes, it did.
Suzie: So he can survive a bullet through the head?
Gwen: Yes.
Suzie: How?
Gwen: I don't know. He won't explain it properly. He said something happened to him a while back. He said, he said he can't die. Not ever.
Suzie: And he makes judgements about whether I'm allowed to live. It's all very easy for Captain Jack, isn’t it?

Suzie: We're just animals howling in the night, cause it's better than silence.

Jack: Why are you doing this?
Suzie: Because life is all, Jack. You should know! I’d do anything to stay. Anything.

Suzie: Captain, my Captain. Do you want to know a secret? There’s something moving in the dark and it’s coming, Jack Harkness, it’s coming for you.

Ianto: If you're interested, I've still got that stopwatch.
Jack: So?
Ianto: Well. Think about it. Lots of things you can do with a stopwatch.
Jack: Oh yeah! I could think of a few.
Ianto: There's quite a list.
Jack: I'll send the others home early. See you in my office in ten.
Ianto: That's ten minutes and counting.

Ianto: What do you want me to say on the death certificate?
Jack: Good question.
Ianto: She had quite a few deaths in the end.
Jack: I don’t know. "Death by Torchwood".

Ianto: That's the thing about gloves - they come in pairs...

22 May 2013

Quotes from "Greeks Bearing Gifts"

Jack: Once, just once, I’d like to walk into one of these tents and find it’s a party, with food, and drink, and dancing; a girl crying in the corner.

(finding a skeleton)
Gwen: Any idea what it is.
Jack: Not a clue. Could be a weapon or a really big stapler. Hows our friend there?
Owen: She's dead.
Jack: Yeah, thanks, Quincy.

Gwen: (helping Owen up) Oh you're so light, you're like a girl!
Owen: I’m not light. I’m wiry. The fat girls go mad for it. But I guess I don’t need to tell you that

Owen: You know what, Tosh, sometimes I think even that stick up your arse has got a stick up its arse.

Mary: Toshiko Sato, born in London 1975, moved to Osaka when you were two then back to the UK in 1986. Parents in the RAF, Grandfather worked at Bletchley Park, very impressive. University, blah blah, snapped up by government scientist think-tank when you were twenty, recruited to Torchwood three years ago.

Tosh: What’s most amazing are the similarities with our own culture, but that can be horrible ‘cause we find lots of weapons and it just makes you think "my God, everything wages war". It’s not just a trait of ours, but a trait of existence. And it makes you feel so hopeless. But then there are times, we found this thing, it was about A4 size and it had all these symbols on it and it took me about three months to translate. It was a letter someone had written to his family; to his children to say how much he was missing them. It just made me cry because I thought, "even across these unimaginable distances, there are fundamentals that stay exactly the same". And there’s no-one to talk to about this. I mean, the guys at work, they’re great but, they don’t see it the way I do. (Pauses) I could be fired just for telling you that.

Gwen: (thinking about Tosh) Oh, sweetheart, the jeans and the boots thing has really kind of had its day.

Ianto: (thinking) Can't imagine a time when this isn't everything. Pain so constant, like my stomach's full of rats. Feels like this is all I am now. There isn't an inch of me that doesn't hurt. (aloud; cheerily) I’m about to brew some of Jack’s industrial strength coffee. Would you like a cup?
Tosh: I’m… fine, thanks Ianto.

Gwen: As you may remember, at the building site, Owen said that this was a woman killed by a single gunshot.
Owen: Yeah, I’d been like a minute.
Gwen: Since then he’s had to tweak some of his initial conclusions. This first being that this isn’t in fact a woman, but a man.
Owen: A young man. A very girly man.
Gwen: But, still, ultimately a man. Then there was the cause of death. Owen said GSW. The correct answer was…
Owen: Unidentified trauma. But…
Tosh: Unidentified trauma?
Gwen: You see it in RTAs. When something like a steering column or a post goes into a body at great velocity. But the one thing that could be ruled out was…
Owen: Gunshot wound.
Gwen: Gunshot wound. Was there in fact any part of your prognosis that was right?
Owen: I got that it was… a skeleton.

Owen: So I started looking into devil worship and stuff from that era, see if there’s anything about plucking out hearts. And would you believe it, there’s nothing. They ate eyeballs, they drank blood, they had sex with animals but they did not pluck out each other’s hearts, ‘cause obviously that would have been weird.

Tosh: I’m giving them the pendant.
Mary: Right, let’s...
Tosh: You’re right. It’s not like reading someone’s diary. It’s so much worse, and it makes me feel dirty and ashamed and now I’m spying on my friends.
Mary: Some friends.
Tosh: What’s that supposed to mean?
Mary: They pity you. They exclude you.

Tosh: So I’m shagging a woman and an alien.
Mary: Which is worse?
Tosh: I know which one my parents would say.

Tosh: I can’t stand it anymore. The weight of it, the depravity, the fear, it fills me up. It’s in my mouth, in my hair, my eyes, like I’m drowning in ink. And even when I don’t have the pendant on, it feels like there’s nothing, I can’t forget the things I’ve seen, the things I’ve heard. It’s like a curse, something the gods sent to drive someone mad. I had hope, I’d see something, a little random act of kindness, and make me think we were safe. Some essential good in us. There isn’t. It’s like one of the Weevils, look inside and there’s just a great chilling scream. You were right. Everything you said about us: we’re frightened and callous and I can’t be a part of it any longer. I don’t know what to do. Tell me what to do.
Mary: Get me into Torchwood.

Mary: You smell... different than them.
Jack: That's nothing. It's when you compare teeth with a British guy. That's when it's really scary.
Mary: What are you?
Jack: I don't know.

Tosh: Has she gone home?
Jack: I reset the coordinates.
Tosh: Where to?
Jack: To the centre of the Sun. It shouldn't be hot, I mean, we sent her there at night and everything.
Tosh: You killed her.
Jack: Yes!

Tosh: Why couldn’t I read your mind?
Jack: I don’t know. Though I could feel you scrabbling around in there.
Tosh: I got nothing. It’s like you were… dead.

Tosh: Jack, something Mary said. Probably the only honest thing she ever did say. I asked her why she gave it to me. She said after a while, it gets to you. It changes how you see people. How can I live with it?
Jack: There are some things we’re not supposed to know. You got a snapshot, nothing more.
Tosh: I don’t mean about Gwen and Ianto and Owen. I mean, the whole world.

Quotes from "Countrycide"

Owen: I hate the countryside. It's dirty, it's unhygienic. And what is that smell?
Gwen: That would be grass.
Owen: It's disgusting.

Ianto: (handing out burgers from a roadstand) Sure you don't want anything, Tosh?
Tosh: Really sure. A friend of mine caught hepatitis off a burger from one of these places.

Jack: (to Owen) No other race in the universe goes camping. Celebrate your own uniqueness!

(as Owen sets up a tent)
Tosh: Need a hand getting it up, Owen?
Owen: If I did, I wouldn't ask you.

Gwen: Who's the last person you snogged?
Owen: You even sound like an eight year old. Who the hell says 'snog'?
Gwen: Mine was Rhys.
Owen: Yeah, well, there's a surprise.
Gwen: Tosh, your go.
Tosh: It's easy for you.
Gwen: Oh, come on. Spill the beans!
Tosh: Owen.
Owen: What?
Gwen: Really?
Owen: Tosh, love, in your dreams.
Tosh: Three a.m. Christmas Eve, in front of the Millennium Centre, waiting for a cab. I had mistletoe.
Owen: Christmas. You've not had a snog since...?
Tosh: No.
Owen: Well, lucky me, eh?
Tosh: So, who was yours?
Owen: Gwen, actually.
Tosh: When was this?
Gwen: It was complicated.
Tosh: Didn't take you long to get your feet under the table.
Gwen: What?
Tosh: So was it just a kiss or...
Gwen: Tosh. Leave it.
Owen: Jack?
Jack: Are we including non-human life-forms?
Owen: You're a sick man, Harkness. That is disgusting!

Gwen: Couldn't you have kept that to yourself?
Owen: What's the matter, you embarrassed?
Gwen: You're such an arrogant shit sometimes, Owen.
Owen: See, to my mind, that was a good kiss. It was borderline great, so good, in fact, you've been avoiding me ever since.
Gwen: Country air's making you delusional.
Owen: How long did it last? Ten seconds? And the things I can tell from that kiss...
Gwen: Oh, like?
Owen: Like your sex life's ain't up to much.
Gwen: (grabbing him and slamming him against a tree) You what?
Owen: See, although Rhys makes the earth rumble, but he don't make it move, does he?
Gwen: You'd better shut up before I lamp you one!
Owen: (grabbing her back) When was the last time you screwed all night? When was the last time you came so hard and so long you forgot where you are? Doesn't happen with him, does it? Too familiar. Whereas you and me, we're not cosy at all. We'd be amazing. And that scares the shit out of you.

Gwen: What did this, Jack? Cos whatever it is, it can't be human. How far is this gonna spread?
Jack: Stay focused.
Gwen: I should be at home having dinner with Rhys. What am I doing here with you? Don't you ever get scared, Jack?

(Owen is preparing to inject Gwen with a syringe)
Owen: Right, do you want a quip about feeling a small prick?
Gwen: No, but thanks for offering.

Gwen: Do you miss being a doctor?
Owen: Excuse me. Still am a doctor! I just don't do it with patients anymore, that's all. It's ideal. That was the bit I always hated.

Owen: Okay, so what this means, the Rift is spreading and dumping aliens and psychos wherever it fancies.
Jack: Looks like that.
Owen: Great, this conversation's cheered me up no end.

Gwen: We're Torchwood, have you heard of Torchwood?
Huw: What's this then, a band, is it?

Tosh: What are you gonna do? Put us on meat hooks?
Evan Sherman: No. Not yet. You see, meat has to be tenderized first.

Gwen: The whole village was involved.
Evan Sherman: Every generation. Our tradition. Once a decade. Target those travelling through, those most likely to disappear.
Gwen: And butcher them? What sort of people are you that you wake up in the morning and think "this is what I'm going to do"? Why do you do it? Come on, make me understand.
Evan Sherman: Why do you care?
Gwen: I have seen things you would never believe and this is the only thing I can't understand.
Evan Sherman: So keep on wondering.
Gwen: Tell me! I need to know why!
Jack: That's enough. Time to go.
Evan Sherman: I'll tell you something, if you let me whisper. (Gwen nods; he whispers) Because it made me happy.

Quotes from "Small Worlds"

Estelle: Jack and I have always disagreed about fairies. I only see the good ones; he only ever sees the bad.
Jack: They’re all bad.
Estelle: No, I refuse to believe that!
Gwen: Well, I suppose one person’s good could be somebody else’s evil.

Jack: She calls them fairies. I don’t.
Gwen: What do you call them?
Jack: They’ve never really had a proper name.
Gwen: How come?
Jack: Something from the dawn of time. How could you possibly put a name to that?
Gwen: Are we talking alien?
Jack: Worse.
Gwen: How come?
Jack: Because they’re part of us, part of our world, yet we know nothing about them. So we pretend to know what they look like. We see them as happy. We imagine they have tiny little wings and are bathed in moonlight.
Gwen: But they’re not?
Jack: No. Think dangerous. Think something you can only half see, like a glimpse, like something out of the corner of your eye with a touch of myth, a touch of the spirit world, a touch of reality, all jumbled together, old moments and memories that are frozen in amongst it. Like debris spinning around a ringed planet, tossing, turning, whirling, backwards and forwards through time. That’s them, we have to find them, before all hell breaks loose.

Ianto: I blame it on the magic mushrooms.
Jack: What you do in private is none of our business.

Jack: I spell out the dangers, you keep looking for explanations.
Gwen: That’s what police work’s all about.
Jack: This isn’t police work.
Gwen: All right, then. Science.
Jack: And it’s not science.
Gwen: I know, you told me. It’s that "corner-of-the-eye" stuff.

Gwen: Why the petals in his mouth?
Jack: Just a bit of fun on their part.
Gwen: You call that fun?
Jack: That’s the way these creatures like to do things. They plays games, they torment, then they kill.
Gwen: Why?
Jack: As a punishment or a warning to others. They protect their own. The Chosen Ones. Somehow children and the spirit world, they go together.
Tosh: So how do we stop them?
Jack: First we have to find out who they want. And we can’t trap them. They have control of the elements. Fire, water, the air that we breathe. They can drag that air right out of our bodies. Sometimes I think they’re part Mara.
Tosh: Mara?
Jack: Kind of malignant wraiths. It’s where the word "nightmare" comes from. They suffocate people in their sleep.

Gwen: It wasn't your dad that was in love with her all those years ago, was it? It was you.
Jack: We'd once made a vow; that we'd be with each other until we died. I need a drink.

Gwen: Where did you and Estelle meet?
Jack: In London. At the Astoria ballroom. A few weeks before Christmas. She was seventeen years old and she was beautiful. I loved her at first sight. But nothing lasted back then. Promises were always being broken. Estelle...to have to die like that...

Lynn: So who are they?
Jasmine: Just friends.
Lynn: You should have invited them to the party.
Jasmine: They don’t like parties.
Lynn: I’m not surprised if they live in trees.
Jasmine: Oh, they don’t always live in trees. They can be anywhere and everywhere. They can even be in this room.

Lynn: Where did you meet these friends? Must’ve met them somewhere.
Jasmine: They said they’ll always look after me. Even through time.

Jasmine: Do you know you're walking in the forest? Well, you are. It looks like a very old forest and it's magical. I want to stay in it.
Jack: You can see this forest?
Jasmine: Yes.
Jack: But it's not here. It's just an illusion, Jasmine. It is. Your friends are just playing a game with you. The real forest can never come back.
Jasmine: Oh, it can. When they take me to it.
Gwen: They told you this? But what about your mother, don't you want to stay with her?
(the fairies arrive)
Jack: Come on. The child isn't sure.
Jasmine: I am sure! (Jack grabs her) No!
Jack: Leave her alone. Find another Chosen One.
Fairy: Too late. She belongs with us.
Jack: The child belongs here!
Fairy: No! She lives forever.

Jack: Suppose we make her stay with us.
Jasmine: Then lots more people will die.
Gwen: They tell you that?
Jasmine: They promised.
Fairies: Come away, oh human child.
Jasmine: Next time, they'll kill everybody at my school, like they killed Roy. And that man. And your friend.
Gwen: How do you know these things?
Jasmine: If they want to, they can make great storms, wild seas, they can turn the world to ice, kill every living thing. Let me go!
Jack: The child won’t be harmed?
Gwen: Jack, you can’t...
Jack: Answer me! She won’t be harmed?
Fairy: We told you. She lives forever.
Jasmine: Dead world. Is that what you want?
Jack: What good is that to you? There will be no more Chosen Ones.
Jasmine: They’ll find us, back in time.
Jack: Take her.

Fairies: Come away, O human child! To the waters and the wild. With a fairy, hand in hand, For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

Quotes from "Cyberwoman"

Toshiko: All I'm saying is, once in a while, I'd like to drive!
Owen: And all I'm saying is no!
Toshiko: Why not?!
Owen: Look, I've shared cars with women before. I know what'll happen. There'll be an emergency, we're all raring to go, I jump in, what do I find? Seat's in the wrong position, the rear view mirror's out of line and the steering wheel's in my crotch. Time it takes to sort it all out, aliens'll have taken Newport.

Jack: Ianto...come in, Ianto. I need to hear those beautiful Welsh vowels!

Jack: Execute her or I'll execute you both!
Ianto: You think you're some kind of hero, but you're the biggest monster of them all!

Gwen: You would never have shot him, not really.
Jack: Wouldn't I?
Gwen: Would you have shot me if I'd gone to stand by him?
Jack: But you didn't.
Gwen: If I had, though.
Jack: But you didn't.

Gwen: So have you ever loved anyone, that much?
(Jack doesn't answer)
Gwen: When she had hold of you, I thought just for a moment I thought that maybe you could die after all.
Jack: Wanna know a secret?
Gwen: Hmm.
Jack: So did I...and just for a second there, I felt so alive.

Quotes from "Ghost Machine"

Gwen: I've lost him, Tosh. I've lost him.
Tosh: I swear, whatever it is, you're holding it.

Jack: Gwen? Are you all right?
Gwen: I've just seen a ghost.

Owen: Intense emotions can be part of a neurological event. Hallucinations. Dementia.
Gwen: I wasn't hallucinating, Owen. And I'm not bloody senile.

Jack: You pushed this button and that caused this apparition moment?
Gwen: Yeah. Jack starts fiddling with the device. Jack, no!
Jack: As if.

Jack: Run a full check. Births, marriages, deaths. Criminal record, passports. However long it takes, wherever he is, we'll find him.
Owen: Found him.... He's in the phonebook.

Rhys: Gwen, I can live with all the Secret Squirrel stuff, but if you can't even tell me if you're coming home.
Gwen: Well, nagging isn't helping.

Jack: Gorgeous nanotechnology. Makes NASA look like Toys 'r' Us.

Jack: Human emotion is energy. You can't always see it or hear it, but you can feel it. Ever had deja vu? Felt someone walk over your grave? Ever felt someone behind you in an empty room? Well there was. There always is.
Gwen: A ghost.

Gwen: I don't even kill spiders in the bath.
Jack: Nor do I. Not with a gun.

Jack: The problem with seeing the future is you can't just sit and look at it. You've got to try and change things.

Quotes from "Day One"

Jack: Alright, usual formation.
Gwen: What's the usual formation?
Owen: Varies.
Gwen: How can the usual formation vary?

Private Moriarty: Who the hell are you?
Gwen: Hi. Sorry.
Sgt. Johnson: This area’s restricted.
Gwen: No, it’s alright. I’m with Special Ops. I’m Special Ops. Torchwood? I’m with Torchwood.
Sgt. Johnson: Don’t mess with me, little girl. You’re not with Torchwood. And even if you were...
Jack: You’d have put out the welcome banners. Now, first of all, she’s no little girl. From where I’m standing, all the right curves in all the right places. But she is Torchwood, we both are, and we’d appreciate it if you’d leave us to do the real work.

Jack: What do we know?
Owen: Bog standard space debris. That’s the technical term.

Owen: Make yourself useful, sweetheart, pass us the big chisel from the toolbox.
Gwen: Not "sweetheart". Gwen. One syllable, sure you can manage it.
Owen: Not "Sweet-cheeks"? "Freckles"? "New Girl"?
Gwen: It’s a shame your tool’s not big enough for the job, darling. Catch.

Gwen: What do you think has happened? I mean it was just gas, wasn't it? Can't be too bad, can it?
Owen: Right because gas never did anyone any harm.

Gwen: He just...
Jack: Came and went.
Owen: Now that's how I'd like to go.
Tosh: I'm sure we could arrange it.

Gwen: What about his family? You can’t just fake his death!
Jack: You want to tell his family he died screwing an alien?

Gwen: So what's this supposed to do?
Jack: I'm using satellite tracking data to determine the inward trajectory of the meteorite.
Tosh: He means he's trying to find out where it's come from.
Jack: Hey! Sometimes a little technobabble is good for the soul!

Gwen: So this is like a route plan.
Tosh: Not far off.
Gwen: Rhys, my boyfriend, he's a transport manager, he does this sort of stuff...on a slightly smaller scale.
Tosh: You have a boyfriend?
Gwen: Yeah. Have you?
Tosh: Don't have time with this job.
Gwen: What about you, you seeing anyone?
Owen: You've gotta be joking. I can get all the grief I need here.
Gwen: None of you have partners?
Owen: Just you, newbie.
Gwen: I'm not being rude or anything, but...Well, maybe I am, but...How do you switch off from all this stuff? What do you do to relax?
Owen: I torture people in happy relationships.

Jack: Put your trousers on and get out. NOW! It almost breaks my heart to say those words.

Jack: See what you can find out from her.
Gwen: But aren't you going to help me? I don't know what I'm doing.
Jack: It's usually better if you don't say that in front of the prisoner.

Jack: You know, strictly speaking, throttling the staff is my job.

Jack: She's a walking aphrodisiac.
Gwen: I did wonder why I...actually, I've sort of... snogged her.
Jack and Tosh: We know.

Jack: So what’s our next move?
Owen: Stop the entire city of Cardiff from shagging?
Gwen: Put bromide in the water supply?
Jack: No. Too hit and miss.
Owen: Yeah, and the water company got really pissed off the last time we did that.

Carys: (possessed by the alien) All this sex. All we see, all we think. So much beauty and so much fear. We want it but we’re so afraid.

Jack: Travel half way across the universe for the greatest sex, you still end up dying alone.

Jack: Do one thing for me. Don’t let the job consume you. You have a life. Perspective. We need that.
Gwen: Who are you, Jack?
Jack: I’m sorry?
Gwen: You can’t die. You tell me the twenty-first century’s when it all changes, that we have to be prepared.
Jack: So you do.
Gwen: But how can you know?
Jack: You think knowing the answers would make you feel better?
Gwen: Who are you? What are you doing here?
Jack: Go home, Gwen Cooper. Eat lasagna. Kiss your boyfriend. Be normal. For me.

Quotes from "Everything Changes"

Jack: There you go! I can taste it! Oestrogen. Definitely oestrogen. Take the pill, flush it away, it enters the water cycle, feminiaes the fish, goes all the way up into the sky then falls all the way back down onto me. Contraceptives in the rain. Love this planet. Still, at least I won't get pregnant. I'm never doing that again.

Gwen: Who are they, Torchwood?
PC Andy: I'll bet you ten quid they're DNA experts. It's all this CSI crap these days. CSI: Cardiff. I'd like to see that! They'd be measuring the velocity of a kebab!

Jack: Before we go any further, who the hell orders pizza under the name of “Torchwood”?
Owen: Er, yeah, that would be me. Sorry, I’m a twat.

Gwen: I’m getting tired of following you.
Jack: No, you’re not. And you never will.

Jack: The 21st Century is when it all changes, and you've got to be ready.

Jack: That is so Welsh.
Gwen: What?
Jack: I show you something fantastic. You find fault.

Jack: I can’t die.
Gwen: Okay.
Jack: But I can’t. Something happened to me a while back. Long story and far away. But I was killed.... and then I was brought back to life, and ever since then... I can’t die.
Gwen: But how...?
Jack: I don’t know. One day I’ll find a doctor, the right sort of doctor and maybe he can explain it. But until then...
Gwen: Nothing kills you?
Jack: Well, it kinda freaks people out, so best if you don’t say anything.

Series 4 Episode 13: Journey's End

Summary:
The Doctor heals his body but is able to put the rest of his regeneration energy into his hand, so he doesn't change into another person. The Daleks find the Tardis and bring it to their ship. With everyone out of the Tardis except Donna, the Daleks try to destroy it. But when Donna touches the Doctor's hand a human version of him grows out of it and saves the Tardis from destruction. Martha has reached Germany and activates one of the Osterhagen stations. Sarah Jane, Mickey and Jackie are on board the Dalek ship and are barely able to escape the Reality bomb. There they meet Jack and try to destroy the Daleks. But the Daleks are able to bring all of them to the vault. They haven't expected to see the human Doctor and Donna appear out of nowhere and suddenly Donna turns into a human Time Lord. Together they manage to defeat the Daleks and bring all the planets home. The human Doctor destroys all the Daleks, a thing the Doctor wouldn't have done. After the Earth is at it's normal place, the Doctor says goodbye to his companions and leaves the human Doctor with Rose in the parallel world. Is there a future for him and Donna?

This is such a beautiful and, at the same time, sad ending for a series. We have all of the (mostly new) companions of the Doctor in one episode and we even have a human Doctor that grew out of Ten's hand. I Don't think that Davros is right that the Doctor has turned his companions into weapons because the creator of the Daleks just doesn't know what people do for each other when they love someone. It was a great surprise that Dalek Caan helped the Doctor and that he was the one who brought Donna to all the right places, so she was able to save the universe. It's so cool to finally see why Donna is so special and she makes a great Time Lord. Then there are the sad goodbye scenes where all the companions leave the Doctor and get back to their own lives. Rose now has a chance to grow old with the human Doctor but it's sad nonetheless that we probably won't see her again. The most heartbreaking moment is when the Doctor has to take away Donna's memories because she would die otherwise and now he has to travel alone once more.

Series 4 Episode 12: The Stolen Earth

Summary:
Donna and the Doctor land on Earth but everything seems to be perfectly normal. Suddenly there is something like an earthquake and when the Doctor looks outside the doors of the Tardis, the Earth is gone. It has been moved to a place unknown to the Doctor. To find it again, he seeks out the Shadow Proclamation with Donna to ask for help. Meanwhile on Earth, the people are terrified because there are suddenly strange planets in the sky and they don't know why. UNIT, Torchwood and Sarah Jane Smith try to find out what has happened when their darkest fears come back in form of the Daleks. Martha tries to call the Doctor but he doesn't respond and when the Daleks attack she manages to return to the UK with an experimental teleportation device. Harriet Jones brings Sarah Jane, Torchwood and Martha together and together they try to call the Doctor with the sub-wave network. The Doctor and Donna have received useful information at the Shadow Proclamation and are now in the Medusa Cascade but there is no trace of the missing planets. When the Doctor gets a call, he is able to link to the signal which brings him into the same time with the missing planets. Will he and his friends be able to defeat the Daleks?

I really think this is a great opener for the series finale. It just has such a mean cliffhanger that you have to watch the next episode when you want to know what happens. It's great that all of the companions of the Doctor fight together to defeat the Daleks and you wouldn't have expected that this would happen. That was a big surprise when they all appeared one after the other and there is even Harriet Jones one of my favourite characters although this is her last appearance on Doctor Who. The Daleks are always a good enemy for a series finale and with the return of Davros, the creator of the Daleks is back again. With the Earth under attack, the companions ready to fight for their lives and the tragic meeting of Rose and the Doctor, the story just begins. There will definitely be some great surprises in the last episode of series 4.
