Series Seven Part Two

I have to say I really liked the second part of series seven but now we have to wait sooo long for the 50th special. I guess I have to spend this time with re-watching of some of the older episodes.
Well, back to series seven. I can't really say which episode was my favourite because I liked most of them equally. The only episode I didn't like very much was "The Rings of Akhaten". It was a brilliant looking episode but I just thought that there wasn't enough story behind it.
The interactions of Clara and the Doctor are great, although it would be nice to get to know her a bit better. We know a lot about her past and how she behaves but maybe the character needs just a little more depth. Otherwise I'm really happy with her as a companion.
Matt was again brilliant as the Doctor and I hope he will play the role for at least one series more.
What I don't understand is all the Steven Moffat hate on the net. I think he is great as the showrunner of Doctor Who. If you don't like the episodes anymore then stop watching and don't try to ruin the experience for everybody else. Maybe that's one of the reasons Steven left Twitter.
But enough of that. The second half of the seventh series was great to watch and ended with a hell of a cliffhanger for the 50th anniversary special.

Series 7 Episode 13: The Name of the Doctor

Summary (Spoilers):
Madam Vastra, Jenny, Strax, Clara and River have a conference call in a dream room. Vastra tells them about the coordinates where the Doctor's greatest secret is hidden and also mentions Trenzalore. Meanwhile someone is in Madam Vastra's house and kills Jenny and River wakes her and Strax up. They find themselves surrounded by Whisper Men, who take them away. More appear in the dream room together with the Great Intelligence. When Clara wakes up, she tells the Doctor what has happened and that he can only save his friends when he goes to Trenzalore. The Doctor explains to her that this is the only place where he shouldn't go but does it nonetheless because he wants to save Vastra, Jenny and Strax. They land on a graveyard and make their way to the Tardis where they hope to find the others. When Whisper Men attack them, they find a hidden tunnel with the help of River and get into the Tardis where Clara remembers things about her dying twice, which she shouldn't remember. The Doctor and Clara are able to find Vastra, Jenny and Strax and the Great Intelligence tries to force the Doctor to open the doors of the Tardis by saying his name. Although the Whisper Men torture his friends he doesn't say his name but River does. Inside the control room the Great Intelligence steps into the Doctor's timeline and kills him in all his incarnations and all the good the Doctor has done, all the lifes he has saved, is lost. Only Clara knows how to save him, because she has done it before and so she steps into the Doctor's timeline as well to safe his life. When everything is back to normal the Doctor tries to figure out how he can save her and the ghost of River tries to stop him from entering his own timeline. She is surprised that he is able to see her but then she tells him that she's only still there because he hasn't said goodbye. River gives him hope that he can still save Clara and so he steps into his timeline to bring her back.

Wow, this really was a great finale and we got some answers to questions but at the same time there is a whole bunch of new questions for us, too. We finally know how Clara can have so many incarnations and deaths and I think Steven Moffat found a great solution here. It's only because she wanted to save the Doctor from dying and therefore she gave herself up to save him. The way they showed her in the Doctor's timeline with the different costumes was great. It was also brilliant that they managed to fit in former incarnations of the Doctor which must have been quite some post-production work. We still don't know the name of the Doctor though but I wasn't really expecting that Steven Moffat would give this secret away. I really enjoyed to see River again and we haven't seen this version of her since "The Forest of the Dead". Her scene with the Doctor was lovely and heartbreaking and I really hope we will see her again. I honestly hadn't expected an ending like this and I want to know how this is resolved but unfortunately we still have to wait until November to find out.
I really enjoyed the finale of the seventh series but I think I have to watch it again to catch all the little details I haven't seen in the first go. Well, I have enough time until November I guess.

Series 7 Episode 12: Nightmare in Silver

Summary:
The Doctor takes Clara, Artie and Angie to Hedgewick's World of Wonders, the biggest amusement park in the world. There is only one problem. The park is closed and there haven't been visitors for quite a while. Mr Webley shows them around and the Doctor is alarmed when it is revealed that there's a Cyberman on this planet. It looks like an empty shell but the Doctor doesn't want to leave until he finds out more about these strange insect that are running around on the planet. While he investigates, Angie runs off and meets the soldiers who are also living on this world. With the others away the seemingly empty Cyberman transforms Artie and Mr Webley and another one kidnaps Angie right in front of Clara and the Doctor. Clara is now in charge of the soldiers and together with them and Porridge they try to find a save place in the amusement park. The Doctor is able to find Angie and Artie but then he is also upgraded and he fights to get the control of his body back. He and Mr Clever agree that they play a game of chess and whoever wins will be the winner of the Doctor's body and mind. While Clara battles the Cybermen in the real world the Doctor tries to get the cyberware out of his head. Will both of them succeed and can they stop the Cybermen from spreading across the galaxy?

I really liked this episode and the upgraded Cybermen were creepier than the ones we saw the last time. It was weird to see them move that fast or that they could separate parts of their bodies from the rest. I think Neil Gaiman managed to make the Cybermen scary again and I really hope we don't see them again very soon. I was really glad that I've watched this episode in the middle of the day and not at night. Another thing I really liked was the struggle of the Doctor with the cyberware in his head. In my opinion, Matt Smith managed to show this battle going on in the Doctor's head in an amazing way and these scene show that he's a brilliant actor. Clara had a bit more to do in this episode and I liked how she handled the soldiers and the situation around her. It's interesting that she only trusts the Doctor to a certain degree and that's quite a difference to some of the former companions of the Doctor. After this episode she knows a bit more about the reasons why the Doctor is so fascinated by her and I really hope we will get a good solution to the riddle who Clara is in the next episode which will be the last of the series. A really exciting episode and I cross my fingers that the next episode will be even better.

Series 7 Episode 11: The Crimson Horror

Summary:
Madam Vastra and Jenny are visited by a man who tells them of his dead brother. The last image the man saw before he died was the face of the Doctor. Together with Strax they travel north to York and try to find out what happens in Sweetville and where the Doctor is. Jenny infiltrates Sweetville but before she is registered she slips away into the factory. When she is there, she finds out that it's not a factory and follows some of Mrs Gillyflower's people who carry a red fluid in a bottle. Meanwhile Madam Vastra visits the morgue and recognises the fluid that coats the dead people's bodies. It's a deadly poison from the time when the Silurians still ruled the Earth. Jenny has found the Doctor and she is able to revive him. While they search for Clara, the Doctor tells Jenny how he and his companion ended up in Mrs Gillyflower's village. They find Clara and can revive her as well when they are attacked but with the help of Madam Vastra and Strax they are able to get away. Together they soon find out that Mrs Gillyflower wants to kill humanity but when they try to stop her, she uses her daughter as a shield and escapes. Will the Doctor be able to stop the rocket and save humanity?

This was a bit of a Doctor and companion light episode but I really liked it. It's always good to see Madam Vastra, Jenny and Strax again. I especially like the funny remarks of the Sontaran and he always brings a smile onto my face. I think we will see more of the trio at the end of this series. The leech symbiont was a bit disgusting in my eyes but it made a really good story. It was a great idea that this creature could be nearly as old as Madam Vastra and that it's maybe not an alien but something that developed on Earth. I don't know why the Doctor always lands somewhere where he didn't want to go but that doesn't matter to him when he finds an adventures there. The story of Ada was a sad storyline because her mother used her to test the venom of the leech creature. It is good that she now has a perspective to got her own way. The end of this episode was really crazy when the kids confront Clara with the pictures they have found of her on the internet. I really didn't expect this and it was a nice twist at the end. We will see what happens with all of them in the next episode.

Series 7 Episode 10: Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS

Summary:
The Doctor allows Clara to pilot the Tardis but suddenly they are pulled on board of a salvage ship. There is an explosion and the Doctor is thrown out of the Tardis. When he wakes up again, he is surrounded by the salvage crew but Clara is still inside the Tardis. The Doctor promises the men that they can have the engine when they help him to save Clara, though when they are inside his ship he forces them by turning on the self-destruction. Clara wanders through the endless corridors of the Tardis but there is something that chases her. She hides inside the library and finds a book about the Time War in which she reads the Doctor's name. After a while she ends up in an echo of the control room where the Tardis tries to keep her save. The Doctor and two of the salvage crew are also chased by these strange creatures and end up in another echo version of the control room. There the Doctor can hear Clara and he is able to bring her into the echo room he is in and save her from the burned creature. Together they venture into the centre of the Tardis and the Doctor tells Clara that there is a rupture in time and images from the past leak through. She forces him to tell her what these creatures are which are inside the ship and he has to tell her that they are their future selves. They move on but the heart of the Tardis is already exploded. Is there a way to save all of them?

This was definitely another episode with a lot of action in it and it was the first one where we could see something of the inside of the Tardis. It was so cool to see the swimming pool although I would have liked to see more than a glimpse of it. The library was just beautiful and Clara read the name of the Doctor in the book of the Time War. Unfortunately she can't remember it because the Doctor has turned back the time to save the Tardis from exploding. I still wonder how much she remembers of it because it seems that some things aren't forgotten. There are so many mind blowing moments when time collides in the Tardis and there are past, present and future in one place. The guys from the salvage crew where alright for the story but I didn't like the characters very much. Maybe that was just the intention of the writer, I don't know. All in all, this was a good episode and I especially liked to see something of the inside of the Tardis. It has helped to develop the relationship between the Doctor and Clara and I think he is happy that she isn't afraid to travel with him but he still has to find out who she is.

Series 7 Episode 9: Hide

Summary:
The Doctor and Clara are travelling to Caliburn House to find out more about the ghost who dwells there. Alec Palmer and Emma Grayling try to find out more about the ghost too and they have been able to take some pictures of the "Witch in the Well". Emma has psychic abilities and so she is able to feel that the ghost is afraid. The Doctor and Clara look around the house and they somehow feel watched. Clara notices that the ghost is always in the same position in every picture and so the Doctor borrows Alec's camera to travel to different times in the history of the spot where Caliburn House is built. When he and Clara come back he has a series of pictures, which show that the ghost is a person that is trapped in a pocket universe. With Emma's help, the Doctor is able to open a wormhole and save Hila from the pocket universe but then the connection breaks and he is trapped with the monster. Clara can convince the Tardis to help her save the Doctor and she is able to get him out of there. But there is still something nagging at the Doctor. Is the monster really evil?

The setting of this episode was really spooky and it felt like one of the old ghost movies you can watch on TV sometimes. There is the huge manor in a thunderstorm and you have a ghost and a strange monster. Everything a good horror story needs but when you throw in the Doctor it also has many funny moments. I kind of like it that the Tardis has an issue with Clara and doesn't like her as much as she liked Amy and Rory. Maybe that'll change over time but right now it's a funny little side story. I think the explanation that the ghost isn't really a ghost but a time traveller in a pocket universe is quite interesting. This episodes is one of the few where the Doctor is really afraid and I don't know what he would have done without Clara. That shows again that the Doctor can't solve every mystery on his own and sometimes needs help too. I wouldn't have thought that the Doctor just came to the manor to ask Emma if there is something strange with Clara. He is not really happy with her answer and I can't say if it was really the truth or not. I guess we'll find out soon enough. This was a good episode, maybe not the most brilliant one, but a really good and spooky Doctor Who episode.

Series 7 Episode 9: Cold War

Summary:
The Doctor and Clara wanted to go to Las Vegas but suddenly they land on a Russian submarine during the Cold War. When the submarine sinks, the Tardis vanishes and the Doctor and Clara are stuck on the submarine. As if this wasn't enough, they soon find out that the crew has dug an Ice Warrior out of the ice of the North Pole who now wakes up after sleeping 5000 years. The Ice Warrior tries to contact his people but when he gets no answer he tries to kill everybody on board the submarine and to launch the nuclear missiles. He wants revenge because he thinks all of his people are dead. The Doctor and Clara try everything to avoid a war that would change the future of humanity but it's not so easy especially when you are scared like Clara. When the submarine sinks deeper, a spaceship appears suddenly and brings it to the surface. Will everything turn out alright now?

I liked this episode more than the last one. Maybe it was because it had more action or because it played in a submarine. In this episode the monster was more present than in the last one because an Ice Warrior is something different than a being that looks more like a sun. It was really creepy when the warrior got out of it's armour because you didn't really see him only his hands or a part of his face. So it's still a mystery how he looks beneath it. The setting of the submarine makes everything a bit more dramatic because you know that there is now way out for the Doctor and Clara with 700 metres water above them and the Tardis gone because of an emergency protocol. This episode was darker than the ones before but it still had some funny moments in it. I really liked the mix of dark and light moments that Mark Gatiss has achieved in this episode. This was probably the first episode in which Clara was really scared because until now she had only seen the exciting but not that dangerous things with the Doctor. Now she knows that there will be situations where even the Doctor seems to be helpless sometimes.

Series 7 Episode 7: The Rings of Akhaten

Summary:
The Doctor takes Clara on her first trip in the Tardis and brings her to the Rings of Akhaten. Clara is quite impressed by the alien planet and the many alien beings she meets. When she wanders off, she meets Merry, the queen of years. The young girl is scared because she has to sing a song for the Old God at a festival which happens every 1000 years. Clara reassures her that she won't get the song wrong and the girl leaves with some priests. The Doctor finds Clara again and they both go to the arena to hear Merry sing. Something goes wrong and the girl is taken to the temple by a kind of beam. The Doctor and Clara follow her to the temple ad try to save her but they aren't able to keep the Old God from waking up. Clara takes Merry away but she leaves the Doctor in the temple where he gives his memories to the Old God, so he won't consume the people in this galaxy. His memories aren't enough but when Clara gives the Old God her biggest memory he seems to be satisfied.

I don't know why exactly but somehow I liked the last Doctor Who episode more than this one. The alien planet looked brilliant and the masks were great but somehow the story wasn't that good. I enjoyed it but something was missing that would have given the episode this little bit extra to make it spectacular. Maybe I will change my opinion when I watch the episode again but for now I liked the last episode more. Somehow it was strange that the Tardis didn't translate what the aliens said because she normally does that. I guess we've seen this more through the eyes of Clara this time and she probably hasn't been in the Tardis long enough for the translation to kick in. That's the only possible explanation for me. I wonder if the Doctor will bring Clara home at the end of every episode which would be a bit boring for me I think. Well, I will see what the next episode brings and I guess it'll be better again from what I've seen in the trailer.

Series 7 Episode 6: The Bells of Saint John

Summary:
The Doctor is living a monastery when suddenly a monk arrives and tells him that the bells of Saint John are ringing. He rides as fast as he can to his Tardis and wonders who is calling him on this phone. Soon he works out that it is Clara, whom he has searched for a while now. When he arrives at her doorstep he has to save her from a spoonhead who wants to upload her mind into a data cloud. The Doctor manages to save her in time but now he wonders who is using the WiFi to collect people's minds. Clara can't remember what happened to her but suddenly she knows a lot about computers, so it seems that the Doctor has downloaded a little extra into her brain. The lights around them suddenly go out and they see a plane coming towards them. The Doctor jumps into the Tardis with Clara and saves the people in the plane. The next morning, Clara tries to find out where the people are but her mind is uploaded into the data cloud before she can tell the Doctor. He sends a spoonhead that looks like him to his foes but will he be able to save Clara and all the other people?

I think this was a great first regular episode with Clara as a companion. The episode had great action scenes but also some calm moments between the Doctor and Clara. The Doctor is more than happy that he has finally found Clara and now he can figure out why she died twice before and can't remember anything of it. I liked the spoonheads but it was a bit creepy when the turned their heads and there was suddenly nothing else than this electronical spoon-like thing at the back of their heads. The Great Intelligence is back which also appeared in the Christmas Special but now it seems to be stronger than then. I guess that's normal because there lies quite some time between the Christmas Special and this episode which takes place in 2013. That's probably not the last time we will see the Intelligence. It's really creepy when all the people who worked for the Intelligence are resetted in the end. Clara will be a good match for the Doctor because she does so many things he didn't expect her to do. Sorry, I'm just excited that the Doctor is back and I'm really lookin forward to the next episodes.

Oswin: Actually, she was called Nina. I was going through a phase. Just flirting to keep you cheerful.

Oswin: Okay, you're safe for now. Pop your shirt off, quick as you like.

Oswin: Does there have to be a reason?

Oswin: Do you know how you make someone into a Dalek? Subtract love, add anger. Doesn't she seem a bit too angry to you?
Amy: Well, somebody's never been to Scotland.

The Doctor: You know what really gets me about you, Oswin? The soufflés. Where do you get milk for the soufflés? Seriously, is no one else wondering about that?
Rory: No. Frankly, no. Twice.

Oswin: Why do the Daleks call you "The Predator"?
The Doctor: I'm not a predator. Just a man with a plan.
Oswin: You've got a plan?
Rory: We're all ears.
Amy: There's a nose joke going there if someone wants to pick that one off.
The Doctor: In no particular order, we need to neutralize the Daleks in this asylum, rescue Oswin from the wreckage, escape from this planet, and fix Amy and Rory's marriage.
Amy: Okay, I'm counting three lost causes. Anyone else?

The Doctor: As soon as the force field is down, the Daleks will attack. If it gets too explodey-wodey in here, you go without me, okay?
Rory: And leave you to die?
The Doctor: Oh, don't worry about me. You're the one beaming up to a Dalek ship to get exterminated.
Rory: Fair point. Love this plan.

Series 7 Episode 5: The Angels take Manhattan

Summary:
A private detective in Manhattan gets the job to search for living statues. When he comes to the address he was given, he sees himself dying and is zapped back in time. The Doctor, Amy and Rory are in Central Park in New York and enjoy a day off but then Rory doesn't come back and they start to search for him. Soon they find out, that the book the Doctor was reading is true and was written by River. Rory was zapped back in time and meets his daughter there who works as a private detective and investigates the angels. They get kidnapped but the Doctor can lock into Rivers signal and he and Amy land in the correct time. When they get there River is held captive by an angel and Rory was brought somewhere else. Soon they find out that the angels rule Manhattan and that they can only save Rory when they create a paradox. So, he and Amy jump off a house and therefore save everyone else. When everyone thinks all is normal again, a single angel appears and takes Rory back in time. Is the Doctor able to fix everything this time?

Wow, what a brilliant episode and such a great way for Amy and Rory to leave. I was a bit surprised at the beginning because the episode doesn't start like a normal Doctor Who episode but it's kind of cool to first get a look at the story and then add the Doctor into it. It's totally crazy that all statues in New York are alive and it's really a creepy thought. The Weeping Angels are as scary as ever, maybe even scarier if that is still possible. I don't know if I can look at the Statue of Liberty no than I did before. I'll probably remember this episode when I see a picture of it in the future. I think it was a good decision that River is in this episode but that the main focus isn't on her but on Amy and Rory. Now we also know why she isn't in prison anymore and that she's really married to the Doctor. I don't know if that's only my impression but it feels like the Doctor and River are heading in the same direction in time right now but I'm not so sure about that. I really loved the ending although it was very sad and now we also know whom Amy really loved. She still loves the Doctor but she loves Rory more and in the end she can't live without him. A very sad but also a great ending for the Ponds.

Series 7 Episode 5: The Power of Three

Summary:
One day small black cubes land everywhere on earth and even the Doctor doesn't know why they are here. He stays with the Pond's for a while but he's just too restless to monitor the cubes for a longer time. So he leaves Amy, Rory and Brian, Rory's Dad, in charge of monitoring the cubes. UNIT also shows an interest in them and contacts the Doctor. For a couple of months nothing happens and the people get used to these cubes and take them into their homes. Suddenly all the cubes show some signs of activity but they all behave differently and still the Doctor doesn't know what happens. Then there is a count down and when some of the cubes open, people suffer from cardiac arrest. The Doctor's left heart stops as well but soon he finds a portal and he Amy and Rory are on board of a ship in orbit. The cubes shall destroy humanity but will they manage to do so?

Maybe I have to watch this episode again but right now I don't think it's as good as the other ones before, which doesn't mean that it hasn't got an interesting story. The slow invasion is a great idea and I liked to see some of the daily Pond life. It showed again how the Doctor and the Pond's are connected and how they kind of depend on each other. There were many funny moments and I liked how the Doctor played tennis or made some other normal stuff, which looks so crazy when he does it. I can't put my finger on it but somehow I missed something in this episode. I really don't know what but the other episodes before were a bit better in my opinion. Nonetheless, "The Power of Three" is another good episode of series 7 and I hope the next one will be a smasher with the Pond's leaving and the Weeping Angels.

Series 7 Episode 3: A Town Called Mercy

Summary:
The Doctor, Amy and Rory land in a western town with a border around it. The first unsettling thing they encounter is electric lamps and then there is an alien doctor who is hunted by the Gunslinger. The marshal and the people of the town won't give the alien doctor to the Gunslinger and therefore they are trapped in their town. When the Doctor hears this story he decides to evacuate everyone in his Tardis but for that he has to ride out of town. On his way, he finds the ship of the other doctor and soon finds out that he isn't as good as he thought. He was one of the people who built the Gunslinger, who's a cyborg and now wants revenge. Amy can convince the Doctor that he can't be the judge of the other alien and then it comes to a showdown at noon with a surprising ending.

This was another great episode with many funny moments. I loved the part when the Doctor said he could speak horse and the horse wanted to be called Susan. These lines are just brilliant and hey the Doctor was allowed to wear a Stetson again. Ben Browder looked so different in this episode than in Stargate but I liked his character as well. It seems that some time has passed between the dinosaurs and this episode because the Doctor shows some of his ruthless signs he always does when he travels alone for too long. That's a thing that doesn't change with the regenerations. The costumes and make-up, especially for the Gunslinger, were brilliant again and everything really added up to this western feel, although the episode was filmed in Spain. The story was not as complex as some other stories but I didn't mind because in between you need some episodes with a calmer pace and straight forward story telling. I really love the new series so far.

Series 7 Episode 2: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship

Summary:
A spaceship is on it's course to Earth and the Doctor tries to find out how he can stop it. For this mission he brings a whole gang with him including Queen Nefertiti and Ridell. He also picks up the Ponds including Rory's Dad who has to warm up to the thought that he is on a spaceship. They soon find out that the spaceship is carrying dinosaurs and that it was an arch of the Silurians who are gone now. The Doctor is brought to Solomon who boarded the ship and wants to sell the dinosaurs. He also was the one who killed all the Silurians on board. Can the Doctor save the dinosaurs and everyone else before the ship is destroyed by missiles from Earth?

What an amazing episode. I love the idea of dinosaurs and it's cool to see that the Doctor has some new temporal companions not only the Ponds. It was a cool idea to include Rory's Dad as well, which leads to a new dynamic of the episode. I loved the bad guy as well. The episode had exciting, funny but also sad moments and maybe the Ponds will here a bit more from the Doctor now. A really great episode and I hope there will be more of this kind.

Series 7 Episode 1: Asylum of the Daleks

Summary:
The Doctor is called to Skaro but it's a trap and he's taken prisoner by the Daleks. The same thing happens to Amy and Rory and soon all three are together on a spaceship. They are facing the council of the Daleks who send them down into the Asylum, which is like a prison for all the mad Daleks. Down there they find Oswin, who helps them to avoid the Daleks who want to kill them but why does Oswin do this? She crashed on the planet a year ago and the Doctor wonders why she is still human and not a Dalek puppet. While they try to drop the force field so the planet can be destroyed, Amy slowly turns into a Dalek as well. Is the Doctor still able to save everyone or will he perish with the Asylum?

The first episode of series 7 and it was amazing. I didn't expect it to be that good and I surely didn't expect to see Jenna-Lousie Coleman in it who will become the new companion of the Doctor later in the series. I wonder how they will resolve this problem with her being a Dalek who has been destroyed now. Maybe it's her past version who will be travelling with the Doctor. Oh, I don't know and I don't want to speculate about it right now. I thought it was so sad to see Amy and Rory sign the divorce in the first couple of minutes of the episode but you  already knew of their problem when you've watched "Pond Life". Well, I'm happy they are back together. It's kind of cool that the Daleks have forgotten the Doctor now, I definitely wouldn't have expected that. I'm still a bit flashed from the first episode and I'm so looking forward to the next one.
