Summary:
Martha leaves the Doctor and the Doctor wants to travel somewhere on his own. Suddenly the Tardis goes crazy and he faces his fifth incarnation. He knows exactly who is in front of him but the Fifth Doctor doesn't and he thinks that Ten is a fan who somehow got onto his Tardis. While Five tries to solve the problem of two Tardises in one place the Cloister bell rings. Then Ten whirls around the console and he manages to separate the two time stream because he has watched himself doing it before. Now the Fifth Doctor accepts that he's facing his future self and warns Ten to not forget to put up his shield again.
This episode is just brilliant when the two incarnations of the Doctor meet and one knows exactly who the other is but the other one doesn't. I really like the part when Five thinks that Ten is a fan and that he somehow sneaked into the Tardis to be close to his idol. Another great part is, that there would be a hole in the fabric of time of the exact size of Belgium when they can't solve the problem with the colliding timelines. That always makes me giggle. You don't need to watch the episode to know what happens in the Doctor Who universe but it's a great extra and very funny.

Series 3 Episode 13: Last of the Time Lords
Summary:
The Master rules the earth and has the power to decide who lives and who dies. The Doctor, Jack and Martha's family are his prisoners and he likes to torture him because they won't tell him where Martha is. Meanwhile Martha has travelled the world to find a weapon to fight the Master and now she has returned to England. There she meets with Professor Docherty to find out what's inside the metal shell of the aliens. Soon they see, that the humans from the future who wanted to find Utopia are inside and that the Master has made them into what they are now. The Professor betrays Martha and soon she is captured by the Master as well. Now the Master thinks he has won the war but the Doctor reveals to him that Martha wasn't travelling the world to find a weapon but to tell the story of the Doctor. Is that the way to save the world?
The year that never was is a great idea in my opinion, although there have been some rewrites of time in the Doctor Who universe before and after this episode. It's a brilliant final part for this three-parter and a great series finale for series 3. Martha is really the saver of the world because without her the Doctor couldn't have won the war against the Master. I think it's sad to see that she leaves him now but she has to stay with her family after everything that had happened. Martha is one of the companions who leave because she wants to and not because she is left behind or killed or something like this. The Doctor had finally found another Time Lord who is gone now too. This is definitely a hard episode for the Doctor because he is left alone by all of his companions. I love the moment when they reveal that jack is the face of Boe though. Really brilliant.

Series 3 Episode 12: The Sound of Drums
Summary:
The Doctor, Martha and Jack manage to get back to earth with the help of Jack's vortex manipulator. There, Martha finally recognises the voice of the Master, who is no other than Harold Saxon, the new Prime Minister of Great Britain. He seems to know that the three are back because there is a bomb in Martha's flat and they have to go into hiding. Martha's mother has helped Saxon to find her daughter but when they are all taken, she shows some bravery and tells her daughter to run. Jack reveals that he's the leader of Torchwood but he can convince the Doctor that the organisation has changed. The three are able to follow the Master with a perception filter in form of the Tardis key and soon land on a UNIT spaceship. There they find the Tardis but the Master has turned it into a paradox machine and the Doctor has to find out what it is for before he can do anything. The Master is able to rip a whole into time and imprison everyone on board of the ship except Martha, who uses Jack's vortex manipulator to teleport back to earth.
The interaction between the Doctor and the Master is just brilliant in this episode. They are perfect enemies because they know each other so well and you just feel that there was a good chemistry between the actors. This episode leads to the final episode of the tree-parter and produces just the right setting for a brilliant series finale. There are so many hints about what will happen but not so many that you can find out everything easily. We can see what a cruel person the Master is but maybe he would have been different without the drumbeat in is head. I think the Doctor, Martha and Jack are great together and it just feels right that they are fighting together. David Tennant in the mask of an old man looks amazing and he still manages to keep the essentials of the Doctor in this form. A great episode, which wants you to know what happens next

Series 3 Episode 11: Utopia
Summary:
The Doctor and Martha land in Cardiff to refuel the Tardis. Jack jumps at the Tardis when they are just leaving and suddenly the Tardis brings them to the end of the universe. They land on a strange planet where humans are hunted by the Futurekind. The three of them manage to get to the silo where they meet Professor Yana, who tries to make the rocket work. In the silo are the last humans who want to leave the planet and find Utopia. Even the Doctor doesn't know how to fix the engine of the rocket at first but then he just tries something out and it helps. One of the Futurekind has managed to get into the silo and sabotages the start and now the only man who can help is Jack, who can't die anymore. Martha sees the same watch the Doctor owns at the Professor and knows that he has to be a Time Lord in human form. Unfortunately the Professor opens the watch and knows again who he is, the Master. He lets the Futurekind into the silo and leaves in the Tardis. Martha, Jack and the Doctor are stuck at the end of the universe.
"Utopia" is the first part of the final three-parter of series 3. I think it's great to have Jack back. He just brings another dynamic into the show. It's great to see that he is able to talk to the Doctor and that they can settle some of the things that stand between them. I like the idea of an episode at the end of the universe and that the humans still try to find a way out, that they still try to survive. The Futurekind are really creepy and I wonder if they were humans once or if they are a totally different race. I don't think that's ever really explained. The Master is also kind of scary with the drum beats in his head and that he's so ruthless when he finally knows who he is. You can see that the Doctor knows him from the past and that he's not really happy to have him here, especially when the Master steals the Tardis and leaves the others at the end of the universe. Definitely a great start for a three-parter.

Series 3 Episode 10: Blink
Summary:
Sally Sparrow enters an old abandoned house and finds a message on the wall, which warns her about the Weeping Angels. The message is signed by the Doctor and dated 1969. The next day, Sally takes her friend Kathy to the house who vanishes and she gets a strange letter from her, saying that she was transported back into the past and lived a good life. Sally doesn't know what to think about this and therefore she goes to the police where the cop Billy tells her about the empty cars, which were found in front of the house. There is also a police box and Sally comes back when she remembers that the key she has found could fit. The police box is gone and Billy as well but then she gets a call from an old Billy who tells her what happened and that she has to save the phone box from the Angels to save the Doctor. Sally returns to the house to find the phone box but can she really defeat the Angels? How can the Doctor know what will happen?
I think this is the first Doctor-light episode in the show but it's one of the best ones nonetheless. The Weeping Angels are just creepy creatures and you see statues in a totally different light when you've watched this episode. The episode has a dark feeling about it and it's a bit of holding your breath before the big three parter at the end of the series starts. Maybe that's also a reason why we don't see a lot of the Doctor and Martha because the actors were busy filming other scenes and they didn't have enough money left. Well, putting this aside I can only say that this is a brilliant episode and the explanation of time which the Doctor gives on the DVDs is just great. Definitely an episode you have to watch.

Series 3 Episode 9: The Family of Blood
Summary:
The Family of Blood has found the Doctor and now war breaks out a year too early. John Smith, Joan and Martha get back to the school and prepare the boys for a fight but Joan doesn't know if they do the right thing. She doesn't want to loose John through the war like her first husband. The Family of Blood reaches the school with an army of scarecrows that can't be killed and soon everyone tries to escape and not to fight anymore. Martha still tries to convince John Smith to turn back into the Doctor when they find the watch again which holds the essence of the Time Lord. Finally, Joan is the one who convinces him to do the right thing and the Doctor is able to trick the Family and defeat them. When he returns to Joan he isn't John Smith anymore and so he leaves her behind and travels on with Martha.
I liked the second part of this two-parter because it was a good closing to the story. The Doctor is finally himself again but at the same time it was a bit sad to see Joan in this situation. He's the second man she loved and lost in such a short time. It was a great idea to have a narrative of Son of mine for this episode and it gave it another feeling. The short trip into the future was great too when Martha and the Doctor visit their old friend again when he's an old man. Martha was really great in this episode and she was able to fight back. She's now a real companion of the Doctor and I think he trusts her, which you can see when he puts his life into her hands. A great two-parter close to the end of this series.

Series 3 Episode 8: Human Nature
Summary:
John Smith is a schoolteacher in 1913 but he dreams of a strange man called the Doctor. What he doesn't know is, that this isn't a dream but that he's really the Doctor, a Time Lord. He turned himself into a human when he and Martha were chased by aliens. The only one who knows who he really is, is Martha who works at the school. John Smith falls in love with the nurse and Martha doesn't know what to do about it when the aliens arrive. Martha wants to turn John Smith back into the Doctor but the watch is missing and he doesn't want to believe that he's not the man he thinks he is. The Family of Blood needs the Doctor to save their lives and so they threaten Martha and Joan. Whom will John Smith choose?
I think this is a brilliant episode because the Doctor is so different as John Smith than as himself. He still has dreams about his real life and we see a picture of Rose and know that she's still in his thoughts. That's a bit sad for Martha because she's in love with him but he hardly notices her most of the time. She's still the companion which the Doctor really appreciates when she's gone. The actor who play the Family of Blood are really brilliant and I think especially Son of mine is very creepy with this strange smile. Series 3 Episode 7: 42
Summary:
Martha and the Doctor land on a spaceship but they soon find out, that the ship is on it's way into a sun and they are stuck because they can't reach the Tardis anymore. There are only 42 minutes left to restart the engines of the ship but there seems to be something else on board that is not human. After a lock-down Martha helps to get to the front of the ship which isn't so easy because the doors are locked with passwords. She calls her mother to help her a couple of times but when the alien reaches her, she is locked into an escape pod. The Doctor can save her but now the alien is inside of him and he doesn't know how long he can resist. Will the ship fall into the sun or is the Doctor able to come up with a plan?
I think this is another great episode for Martha because this time she has to save the Doctor and not the other way round. It's a bit scary to see that the Doctor can be possessed by another alien lifeform, I just didn't think that would be possible. The episode has an interesting story and it feels a bit like 24 because they only have 42 minutes to save themselves. So, it's an episode in real time. The Doctor seems to like spacesuits because he is wearing one in this episode again but it suits him. I love the modificated phone every companion has and I would like to have one of these myself. Would be cool when you could phone everywhere and don't have to pay for it. :) 42 is a great episode with interesting aliens and a quite simple resolution for the problem but also some deaths that could have been prevented.

Series 3 Episode 6: The Lazarus Experiment
Summary:
The Doctor brings Martha home after their travels and wants to leave but then he hears that Professor Lazarus wants to change humanity and stays. Martha's sister works for Lazarus now and so the Doctor and Martha can watch the big experiment. First everything seems normal but then the capsule with Lazarus inside it has a malfunction and the Doctor shuts it down, so it won't explode. Lazarus comes out and is several years younger than before but everyone finds out soon that he starts to change into a monster. Can the Doctor save everybody before another human dies? He soon finds out that it's not so easy to kill Lazarus and they meet for the final showdown in a place of many memories.
This episode is a stand-alone story after the Dalek two-parter but that doesn't mean that it's bad. We meet Martha's family again and you can see that her mother doesn't like the Doctor. This storyline will be important at the end of series 3 but we don't know in which way yet. Mark Gatiss is just brilliant as Professor Lazarus in this episode. He's both a great writer and actor and the good quality of this episode is partly because of him. Martha and the Doctor are a real team now and at the end of the episode she even gets a Tardis key, which makes her a true companion. I also like Martha's sister Tish who will play a role later too. We still have a lot to look forward to in this series.

Series 3 Episode 5: Evolution of the Daleks
Summary:
A new Empire of the Daleks rises when the manage to make a human Dalek. Soon the Doctor finds out that the human Dalek is more like a human because he has the same feelings and now knows what he has done wrong all the time. He tries to change the plan to turn human bodies into Daleks with the help of the Doctor but the other Daleks hinder him. So the Doctor and his friends race up to the top of the Empire State Building where the Doctor tries to get rid of the Dalekanium before the lightning strikes. He's not able to do it and soon meets the Daleks for a final show down. The human Dalek is a slave now and gets killed but the other Daleks didn't expect the human hulls to have a bit of Time Lord in them. Except for one, all Daleks are killed and history can take it's way.
This second part was a brilliant way to conclude this two-parter and the door for a return of the Daleks is still open. In this episode you can see that the Daleks will never really change who they are and that they'll always be an enemy of the Doctor. It's so nice that the Doctor was able to save Laszlo in the end although he still looks like half a pig. Series 3 Episode 4: Daleks in Manhatten
Summary:
Martha and the Doctor travel to New York in the 1930s. After the financial crisis, many people live in Hooverville in Central Park. When the Doctor and Martha meet the people there, they soon discover that people are vanishing. They volunteer to go down into the sewers to repair something but down there they are confronted with strange things, half human and half pig. These beings chase them and Martha, the Doctor and Solomon can escape but Frank is taken. In the theatre they are in now, they meet Tallulah, who's boyfriend has vanished as well. When Martha is kidnapped by pig slaves, the Doctor chases after her with Tallulah. Down in the sewers they meet Tallulah's boyfriend who has been turned into a pig as well and he promises to help them to find Martha. Soon Martha finds Frank again but she is faced with the Daleks, an enemy the Doctor told her about. What do the Daleks want with all the humans and why do they need the Empire State Building for their plan?
It's always good to see the Daleks back in an episode and here we even have a two-parter. I love the bit when the Doctor tries to find out in which year they are and Martha is just reading it out loud from the paper. You can see that Martha and the Doctor are a better team now, although he's still not completely over Rose. The masks of the pig slaves are very cool but they are also a bit creepy because except for Laszlo, they can't talk. Every time you see the Daleks, you expect them to have some evil plan to take over the world and it's the same in this episode. We don't have normal Daleks in this story, which are bad enough, but here we have the cult of Skaro and they can make their own decisions. I think it's genius that the Daleks try to evolve to survive and the human Dalek is a really crazy mix of species. This episode is a great start for a two-parter and you can't wait to see the second to know what happens next.
Martha and the Doctor travel to New York in the 1930s. After the financial crisis, many people live in Hooverville in Central Park. When the Doctor and Martha meet the people there, they soon discover that people are vanishing. They volunteer to go down into the sewers to repair something but down there they are confronted with strange things, half human and half pig. These beings chase them and Martha, the Doctor and Solomon can escape but Frank is taken. In the theatre they are in now, they meet Tallulah, who's boyfriend has vanished as well. When Martha is kidnapped by pig slaves, the Doctor chases after her with Tallulah. Down in the sewers they meet Tallulah's boyfriend who has been turned into a pig as well and he promises to help them to find Martha. Soon Martha finds Frank again but she is faced with the Daleks, an enemy the Doctor told her about. What do the Daleks want with all the humans and why do they need the Empire State Building for their plan?
It's always good to see the Daleks back in an episode and here we even have a two-parter. I love the bit when the Doctor tries to find out in which year they are and Martha is just reading it out loud from the paper. You can see that Martha and the Doctor are a better team now, although he's still not completely over Rose. The masks of the pig slaves are very cool but they are also a bit creepy because except for Laszlo, they can't talk. Series 3 Episode 3: Gridlock
Summary:
The Doctor decides to grant Martha another trip in the Tardis and so he takes her to New Earth. They arrive in the under city where people sell drugs like "Happy" or "Forget". Martha thinks, that it's a bit strange that the Doctor takes her to the same places to where he took Rose to but she has no time to think about it before she is kidnapped. Two people drag her into their car and take her onto the motorway. The Doctor follows her onto the motorway and can't believe that so many people are there and that for already so many years. Meanwhile, Martha and her two kidnappers are on their way down to the fast lane which is only possible when three people are in a car. They hope to get into a better world when they come to the next exit but when they are on the last lane, something attacks them. The Doctor climbs down to the last lane but when he is there a cat nun takes him to the face of Boe. Can they save the people together?
I like this episode because we see the face of Boe again, which is one of my favourite Doctor Who aliens but it's so sad when he dies in the end because he gives his energy to save the people on the motorway. The whole episode reminds me a bit of "New Earth" when the Doctor visited the planet with Rose and I guess that's a way to connect the second and the third series. It's great that the Doctor and Martha sit together and talk about everything at the end of the episode because that changes something in their relationship. Martha is on a good way to become the new companion and the Doctor starts to notice her as something else than a replacement for Rose. A nice episode with a broad range of aliens and a really unusual setting.

Series 3 Episode 2: The Shakespeare Code
Summary:
The Doctor has promised Martha one trip in the Tardis and so he takes her back in time to London during the Elizabethan time. Martha can't believe that she's really in the past and that she's able to see one of William Shakespeare's plays in the Globe Theatre. Soon she is able to meet him in person but he's quite different than she imagined him to be. When people around Shakespeare start to die, the Doctor wonders if this has something to do with an alien threat. They encounter creatures that look like witches who are able to influence Shakespeare, so he writes a different ending to his play than intended. When the actors come to the end of his play the gate to a different dimension starts to open. Can the Doctor close this gate with the help of William Shakespeare?
The fact that the Doctor is a time traveller and that the writers include so many historic characters is quite cool and a thing I really like in this series. I think Shakespeare is brilliantly played here and the aliens that look like witches fit the setting perfectly. When I first saw this episode, I didn't know that they actually filmed in the real Globe Theatre, which is amazing when you think about it. Martha starts to realize how it is when you travel with the Doctor and that he has other motives to take her along than she thought. She's a bit flattered when Shakespeare flirts with her but knows that she isn't the right person for him. I think it's brilliant that a bit of Harry Potter is included into this episode and that they are able to defeat the aliens when Shakespeare shouts "Expelliarmus". That's a nice little storyline inside the episode, which is definitely worth watching.

Series 3 Episode 1: Smith and Jones
Summary:
Martha is on her way to work when a strange man appears in front of her and takes off his tie before disappearing again. She comes to the hospital and sees the man again when she is on the ward round with the chief physician but he doesn't recognise her. When she listens to his heartbeat, it sounds like he has two hearts. Shortly after that a strange storm starts around the hospital and the whole building is teleported onto the moon. The Judoon appear in their spaceships and it seems that they are searching for an alien being that is hiding in the hospital. Martha soon finds out that the strange man with the two hearts is an alien as well and tries to help him to save all the people in the hospital before they run out of oxygen. They are able to trick the alien to drink the Doctor's blood and so the Judoon are able to find the shape shifter. The hospital is sent back to earth and the Doctor vanishes. Will Martha see him again?
I think this episode is a great start to the third series of Doctor Who and a great introduction for Martha. She is so different than Rose but nonetheless a great companion for the Doctor although he doesn't appreciate that at the beginning. The special effect are amazing especially when you look out of the hospital and there is the surface of the moon. It really looks like the whole building was placed onto the moon. The Judoon are a strange alien race in their armour and with their rhino heads. "Smith and Jones" is a funny story with the alien who drinks blood through a straw. The episode has many funny moments and somehow you know that the Doctor will manage to save the people somehow. I like the way how the first minutes of the episode are connected to the last scene when the Doctor shows Martha that he really is a time traveller and he promises her a trip to thank her for her help. Well, we all know that she doesn't get only one trip.
