Summary:
John Smith is a schoolteacher in 1913 but he dreams of a strange man called the Doctor. What he doesn't know is, that this isn't a dream but that he's really the Doctor, a Time Lord. He turned himself into a human when he and Martha were chased by aliens. The only one who knows who he really is, is Martha who works at the school. John Smith falls in love with the nurse and Martha doesn't know what to do about it when the aliens arrive. Martha wants to turn John Smith back into the Doctor but the watch is missing and he doesn't want to believe that he's not the man he thinks he is. The Family of Blood needs the Doctor to save their lives and so they threaten Martha and Joan. Whom will John Smith choose?
I think this is a brilliant episode because the Doctor is so different as John Smith than as himself. He still has dreams about his real life and we see a picture of Rose and know that she's still in his thoughts. That's a bit sad for Martha because she's in love with him but he hardly notices her most of the time. She's still the companion which the Doctor really appreciates when she's gone. The actor who play the Family of Blood are really brilliant and I think especially Son of mine is very creepy with this strange smile. I've read the book "Human Nature" as well and that's quite different than this episode but I like both. A great first part of this two-parter and something totally different after the last episode in space.

Human Nature by Paul Cornell
"Human Nature" by Paul Cornell features the Seventh Doctor and his companion Bernice Summerfield.
It is early summer in the little town Farringham where John Smith works as a teacher. He's a house master at Hulton College but he's struggling with this post because the boys on this school are made into soldiers. Smith doesn't really know what he should think about war and he has these strange dreams about people from a place called Gallifrey. He falls in love with Joan Redfern, the science teacher, but soon strange things begin to happen. In reality John Smith is the Doctor who wanted to be human for a while. Bernice Summerfield tries to change him back when aliens attack but she can't find the pod where the Doctor's memories are stored and then he doesn't want to change back. Can they defeat the aliens?
When you know the episodes "Human Nature" and "The Family of Blood" with David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, you know what will happen in this book because they have used it for these episodes. To be honest I like the TV episodes more than this book. That doesn't mean that it's a bad book because the story is nearly the same just with another Doctor and companion but sometimes it's a bit confusing, especially the bits at the beginning when we read parts of Benny's diary. Maybe it was just because of the formatting because I read the ebook version of the book but it was hard to get into the book. Sometimes it was a bit longish in between but all in all it's a good Doctor Who book.

John Smith: Permission granted.
John Smith: Mankind doesn't need warfare and bloodshed to prove itself. Everyday life can provide honour and valour. Let's hope that from now on this country can find its heroes in smaller places. In the most ordinary of deeds.
Joan: Where did you learn to draw?
John Smith: Gallifrey.
Joan: Is that in Ireland?
John Smith: Yes, it must be.
Joan: You're not Irish?
John Smith: Not at all, no. My father Sydney was a watchmaker from Nottingham, and my mother Verity was -- well, she was a nurse, actually.
Jeremy Baines/Son of Mine: (to Jenny; very quickly) Just shut up, stop talking, cease and desist, there's a good girl!
(Martha and Joan are being held at gunpoint by the Family of Blood)
Jeremy Baines/Son of Mine: Have you enjoyed it, Doctor, being human? Has it taught you wonderful things? Has it made you better, richer, wiser? Then let's see you answer this: which one of them do you want us to kill? Maid or matron? Your friend or your lover? Your choice!
