Season 5 Episode 13: The Big Bang
Summary:
The Eleventh Doctor is locked into the Pandorica, Rory has shot Amy and River is trapped inside the exploding Tardis. The universe stopped to exist and only Earth is there in the eye of the exploding Tardis. Somehow the Doctor manages to jump back in time and give Rory instructions how he can get him out of the Pandorica. They leave Amy in the Pandorica and Rory guards her for 2000 years. Young Amelia still remembers the stars and she is able to resurrect Amy. Amy, Rory and the Doctor are reunited but they don't have much time to save the universe before it collapses totally. The Doctor is able to save River and brings her out of the Tardis. When a Dalek shoots the Doctor everything seems to be over but the Doctor is still alive and the last thing he does is piloting the Pandorica into the exploding Tardis. The universe is saved but will someone remember the Doctor?
This season really ended with a bang. The story is sometimes quite complicated with the many time jumps and everything but so many puzzle pieces are put together. Some scenes from the former episodes make more sense now when you know how they are connected and you are really amazed how Steven Moffat has mapped it all out. That's just some brilliant writing he does and I like that everything is somehow connected. The Doctor is able to save the universe and all the people in it but they also forget him because he has to be on the other side of the cracks, so they are able to close. I always wonder if River is the only one who truly remembers the Doctor. Her diary is empty but she has to know who he is or she wouldn't have given it to Amy. Well, we probably never know that for sure. I love the last scenes when Amy finally has a family and she marries Rory. The best thing of course is that she is able to bring the Doctor back cause what would we do without him?

Season 5 Episode 12: The Pandorica Opens
Summary:
Vincent van Gogh has painted a picture that shows an exploding Tardis. River tries everything to contact the Doctor and show him the picture. When they finally meet, it's in a Roman camp in Britain and River is disguised as Cleopatra. Together with River and Amy, the Doctor travels to Stonehenge where he finds the Pandorica. He always thought that it was a fairy tale but now it's standing in front of him and it starts to open. Soon, they notice that Stonehenge is transmitting a message and River finds out that thousands of different alien ships are around Earth. It seems that every race in the universe came together to form an alliance. River tries to bring the Tardis to Stonehenge but she has problems with her and lands in Amy's time. There she finds a book with Amy's favourite stories and also a book with Romans with a picture of Rory in it. Meanwhile in the past, Rory saves Amy from a Cyberman but she doesn't recognise him first. The Doctor wonders how Rory can be there but soon he has other problems because it seems that everything what is happening, is a trap for him.
This episode is quite exciting and we are able to see River again. I don't know, I just love the character of River Song, so I'm always glad to see her again. It's brilliant how many connections to other episodes are made in the first couple of minutes and that the characters reappear. That shows that everything is connected in a way. This episode brings the return of Rory as well, although he isn't human anymore. It's just great to have him back and Amy is able to remember him in the end. They have put so many different alien races into this episode, which I find really amazing. Who would have thought that Daleks, Cybermen and all the others would form an alliance to save the universe but they blame the wrong person for it. I love the little action scenes in this episode when Amy fights the Cyberhead or when River pilots the Tardis. This episode is a great first part of the season 5 finale but it's somehow very depressing because there seems to be no hope that everything will be alright again.

Season 5 Episode 11: The Lodger
Summary:
Through a mysterious force the Tardis can't land and Amy is trapped inside it. The Doctor tries everything to find the source of this force and comes across a strange house. He becomes the new lodger of Craig Owens and tries to behave human but he's not very good at it. Meanwhile, people go up to the upper floor of the house but they never come back. Every time that happens there is a sort of time loop and Amy feels the forces inside the Tardis. The Doctor manages to fit into Craig's life and Craig starts to get jealous because Sophie, his friend whom he is in love with, seems to fancy the Doctor. When Craig wants the Doctor to leave, the Time Lord shows him what he is and why he is there and suddenly Craig understands why the man is so strange. Sophie is lured up the stairs as well and she shall be tested as a pilot for the spaceship that hides up there. When the Doctor enters, the ship thinks it has found the perfect pilot and tries to force the Doctor to help it. Can Craig save the planet before it explodes?
I like the character of Craig. He's a bit like a big Teddy bear and you just want to hug him all the time or slap him because he doesn't tell Sophie that he loves her. The Doctor seems to be quite fond of him too and it's just great to see their interaction. I guess Matt Smith has loved the football scenes where he was allowed to play again. It's also an interesting story with the Tardis not able to land and the Doctor has to rely on his intelligence and solve the problem without the technical gadgets he normally uses. The scene where he talks to the cat is also great and just typically for Eleven. We don't see a lot of Amy in this episode but I don't mind that. From time to time you just need an episode where the Doctor can act alone and the companion is more in the background. I enjoyed watching this episode and the moments between Craig and the Doctor are always fun.

Season 5 Episode 10: Vincent and the Doctor
Summary:
The Doctor takes Amy to different places after she has forgotten Rory and they end up in the Musée d'Orsay where they have a look at the exhibition of Vincent van Gogh. In one of Vincent's pictures, the Doctor sees a monster and he decides to visit Vincent to find out what he has seen. Amy and the Doctor find Vincent in a café, where he can't pay for his drinks. When Amy buys him a bottle of wine, they try to find out what Vincent knows about the monster but he is more interested in Amy. Then a young girl is attacked and killed and the villagers blame Vincent for it. Soon they find out that the monster is invisible and that only Vincent can see it. Back in the Tardis, the Doctor tries to find out what kind of alien is in the village with a strange gift from his godmother. He identifies the alien as a Krafayis, which is deadly and so they decide to hunt it. Therefore, they go to the church and in the evening, the alien appears in the window. Are they able to defeat it? Has Amy changed Vincent's life?
I like this episode, although the alien is a bit boring and more like a side story. The main focus is on Amy and that she can't remember Rory after he vanished in the crack but there is still some part of her that feels sad. That's also one thing that Vincent sees and maybe that's the reason why they connect so easily. I think Vincent is portrayed brilliantly and it's strange to see his different moods but it fits what we know about the painter. Today you would be able to treat something like that but not in his time. It's fascinating how they explain why he paints like he does and how he sees nature around him. Vincent's death is probably a fixed point in time and that's the reason why Amy couldn't change the time of his death. Nonetheless, she has changed something for him and he has painted the sunflowers for her. A really nice episode to catch your breath a bit before the finale hits us.

Season 5 Episode 9: Cold Blood
Summary:
The Doctor and Nasreen are captured by Silurian soldiers when they enter the city. Meanwhile Amy and Mo are able to escape from the lab and discover just how many Silurian soldiers live beneath the earth. They also Mo's son Elliot but they can't wake him up. When they try to free the Doctor and Nasreen, they are captured as well. The military leader threatens to kill them, when Rory and the others don't return Alaya but they can't because Ambrose has killed her. Amy is saved by the leader of the Silurians and she and Nasreen negotiate with him about the future of the humans and Silurians on the surface of the Earth. Everything seems to be lost when Rory and the others bring Alaya's body down into the city of the Silurians but the Doctor and all humans are able to escape into lab. They are searching for a way to get back up onto the surface before the drill explodes but do they have enough time?
This episode is a great second part for this story although it has a quite sad ending. It seems like it wasn't the right time yet for the humans and Silurians to share the surface of the Earth. They are quite similar in many ways but the difference are still to big to live together peacefully. I liked the Silurian doctor a lot and was a bit sad when he was killed while he tried to save the humans. You can see that the Doctor wants to think the best of humanity but sometimes he gets disappointed by what they do. Compared to the Doctor, humans are still children and have to learn so much before they can accept other races. The Silurians looked brilliant again and their city under the earth is an amazing place. A really great episode where the cracks appear again. That's another big mystery for the Doctor to solve.

Season 5 Episode 8: The Hungry Earth
Summary:
The Doctor wants to take Amy and Rory to Rio but instead they land in Wales in 2020. When he sees a big drill, he and Amy go off to investigate. Rory wants to follow them after he has put Amy's engagement ring into the Tardis but when he gets out Ambrose and her son think he's a policeman. He goes with them to look at a empty grave that has been emptied from below. Amy and the Doctor discover that someone vanished from the mine the night before and now there is a patch of earth in the floor. The drill is started again and it seems that the ground is fighting back. When the Doctor, Amy and the two workers from the mine try to flee, Amy is sucked into the ground. Suddenly there is a shield over the village and they all can't leave. Something is coming up to the surface and when it gets dark Ambrose's son vanishes as well. The Doctor and Rory can capture one of these beings and the Doctor now knows that they are Silurians. He goes under the earth to find the rest of them but what will he find?
I really love the Silurians. They just look amazing when they don't wear their battle masks and it's interesting to see how human they are. The first part of this two-parter starts really interesting and the way the people go missing, including Amy, is a bit spooky and you really don't know what happened with them. Then you see the Silurians for the first time and you think they are aliens but it's so strange to hear that they come from Earth as well. They were sleeping all this time and were now woken up by the drill. The Doctor is on a quest to bring Amy back and he will do anything to find her. He wouldn't be the Doctor though when he would use weapons. The Doctor always tries to talk to other beings and we will see if he succeeds this time as well. I think it's a cute seen when Rory leaves the ring in the Tardis and maybe that will play a role later on. A great first part of this two-parter.

Season 5 Episode 7: Amy's Choice
Summary:
Amy and Rory now live in a small and calm village and Amy is pregnant. One day the Doctor visits them by accident and they show him around. When they fall asleep on a bench, they are suddenly back in the Tardis and find out that they all had the same dream. Something is wrong in the Tardis but before they can find out what, they are back in the village. They flip back and forth between the Tardis and they don't know what is real anymore. Suddenly there is someone else in the Tardis who call himself the Dream Lord. He tells them that they have to decide which world is the real one or they die. In the Tardis, they are falling into a cold sun and start to freeze to death and in the village they are attacked by the old people who are aliens. It's up to Amy to choose which world is the dream and when Rory dies in the village, she knows how to decide. Are they in the real world now?
This is a great episode for the relationship between Amy, Rory and the Doctor. Here, Amy has to decide whom her heart belongs to and in the end she chooses Rory. That doesn't mean she won't flirt with the Doctor anymore but now we know who her true love is. The story is quite interesting because the Doctor and his companions have to find out what the real world is and what the dream and that is not an easy thing to decide. When you see that the old people in the village are aliens, that's a bit strange but it fits into the world of Doctor Who. This eye thing in their mouths is just a bit gross. I think the explanation in the end, that the Dream Lord was no one else as the Doctor is interesting. It has to be some of his darker parts which he normally prevents to bubble up. In this episode we can see that there is more to the Doctor than the eye can see, especially from his dark side which he doesn't show often.

Season 5 Episode 6: The Vampires of Venice
Summary:
The Doctor tells Rory that Amy has tried to seduce him, which makes Rory quite angry but then the Doctor takes him and Amy back in time to Venice. Shortly after their arrival, they witness a strange scene with a man who searches for his daughter in a bunch of pale girls. Interested, the Doctor runs off and starts to investigate what happens in Venice. Amy wants to help by going into the school but Rory is against it. As it is the only chance to find out what is going on, Rory can't say anything anymore and Amy goes into the school of Rosanna Calvierri. She opens a trap door for Rory and the Doctor but is taken to an underground room shortly afterwards by Rosanna and the girls. They want to turn her into one of them and now Amy know that they aren't facing vampires but aliens. Rosanna starts the transformation of Venice into a world under the ocean to give her family a new home. Can the Doctor stop her and save the people of Venice?
This is the first episode in which Rory travels with Amy and the Doctor and Amy isn't very happy about it first. Rory as addition in the Tardis brings some new conflicts with him because there is this connection between Amy and the Doctor and the fact that Amy and Rory are engaged. This leads to some great moments in this episode especially when the Doctor comes out of Rory's cake instead of a stripper. Rory also gives the Doctor some things to think about when he tells him that he makes people dangerous to themselves because they want to impress the Doctor. The story with the vampires is interesting but maybe not one of the best in the history of Doctor Who. It gives us some interesting facts about the cracks and it mentions the Silence again. "The Vampires of Venice" is a fun story with creepy alien fish and some tiles for the big puzzle.

They want to turn her into one of them and now Amy know that they aren't facing vampires but aliens. Rosanna starts the transformation of Venice into a world under the ocean to give her family a new home. Can the Doctor stop her and save the people of Venice?
This is the first episode in which Rory travels with Amy and the Doctor and Amy isn't very happy about it first. Rory as addition in the Tardis brings some new conflicts with him because there is this connection between Amy and the Doctor and the fact that Amy and Rory are engaged. This leads to some great moments in this episode especially when the Doctor comes out of Rory's cake instead of a stripper. Rory also gives the Doctor some things to think about when he tells him that he makes people dangerous to themselves because they want to impress the Doctor. The story with the vampires is interesting but maybe not one of the best in the history of Doctor Who. It gives us some interesting facts about the cracks and it mentions the Silence again. "The Vampires of Venice" is a fun story with creepy alien fish and some tiles for the big puzzle.

Season 5 Episode 5: Flesh and Stone
Summary:
The Doctor, Amy, River and the Clerics have managed to get into the Byzantium but the Angels are close behind them. While they try to find a way out, Amy starts to count and nobody knows why she does it. They find the forest behind the secondary flight deck, which produces the oxygen for the ship. The Doctor talks to Angel Bob and find out through him that there is something in Amy's eye and that the Angels let her count to scare her. Soon the Weeping Angels have entered the flight deck when a crack appears in the wall that looks exactly like the crack in Amy's wall. With the Angels shortly distracted, everybody is able to flee into the forest but soon Amy feels bad and seems to die. The Doctor tells her, that there is an Angel in her head and it tries to come out but when she closes her eyes it freezes the Angel. He leaves her behind with some Clerics while he searches for the primary flight deck with River and Octavian. Octavian is caught by an Angel and tells the Doctor that River has killed someone and is in prison. Meanwhile, the crack comes closer and the Clerics who want to investigate it just vanish and Amy is alone in a forest with Angels surrounding her. Can the Doctor save her and does he trust River enough to help him?
The second part of this two-parter was somehow scarier because the Weeping Angels now look like real Angels. It's also the first episode where you can really see them move when they know that Amy can't see them, which looks really scary. In this episode we learn a bit more about the mysterious crack that first appeared in little Amy's wall. The Doctor finds out that it rewrites time and lets people forget about certain events or even persons. They just don't exist anymore because there is an explosion somewhere in time and space, that rips the whole universe apart. We also learn a bit more about River and that she is a prisoner because she killed someone. I guess it's a bit of a shock for the Doctor to hear this and he doesn't really know if he should trust her or not but she's River and you can't deny that there's a bond between them. "Flesh and Stone" is a really scary episode, which answers a couple of questions or at least gives you some hints. A great episode.

Season 5 Episode 4: The Time of Angels
Summary:
The Doctor take Amy to a museum where they find a home box with a message for the Doctor on it. When they look at the recordings on the box, they see River Song who gives the Doctor some coordinates. The Doctor pilots the Tardis to River's coordinates and arrives on time to get her out of space. With a little banter between them, River follows the Byzantium with the Tardis and soon the land on Alfava Metraxis where the other ship has crashed. River calls for reinforcement and soon Father Octavian and his men from the church are on the planet as well. They tell the Doctor that a Weeping Angel was on board of the Byzantium and that they have to find and possibly destroy it. Against his will, the Doctor helps them but when he and River leave Amy alone with an image of a Weeping Angel, the image becomes an Angel. Amy manages to freeze the image but something is wrong with her eye. After that, they all enter the labyrinth of the dead but soon some of the soldiers go missing and the Doctor notices that all of the statues are Weeping Angels. Are the able to escape the labyrinth?
I just love the episodes with River Song in them and the banter between her and the Doctor. It's always great to see how they react when they meet each other and now the Doctor knows at least who she is. Here we see that she is a prisoner but the Doctor doesn't know about that yet. River is still a bit of a mystery because we don't know how she is connected to the Doctor. I guess Amy could be correct with her assumption that she is the Doctor's wife. The Weeping Angels are back again in this episode. They are some of my favourite monsters although they are quite scary and seem to be more dangerous than the ones we saw in "Blink". Here they kill people and don't just send them back in time to feed of their energy. The last few moments of this episode are a huge cliffhanger when the Angels close in on the Doctor and the others and we just don't know what's going to happen next. Well, we will see in the next episode.

Season 5 Episode 3: Victory of the Daleks
Summary:
The Doctor got a call from Winston Churchill and now he and Amy are in the middle of World War II. Churchill is quite optimistic to win the war because he has a secret weapon up his sleeves. Proud, he presents his ironsides to the Doctor but he identifies them as Daleks as soon as he sees them. He tries to convince Churchill that the Daleks are evil but first he has success. Only when the Daleks show their real faces everyone believes him. But then it is nearly too late because the Daleks got what they wanted from the Doctor. A way to bring back their race and rule again. Now the Doctor tries everything to stop them but the supreme Daleks are born and he has to decide if he wants to save the Earth or stops them. Which decision will he make?
This is the first time that the Eleventh Doctor encounters the Daleks and there are some really tough decisions he has to make. We can see here that Amy plays a bigger role as his companion because she really helps him out in some moments, especially in the end. I love how they work together and how they start to form a bond. This season is more about Amy and the Doctor and you almost think that she has forgotten all about her fiancé and her wedding. Well, that still makes this a great episode and I really enjoy watching the actor who plays Winston Churchill. He does a brilliant job and I love this little banter between Winston and the Doctor about the Tardis key. So, all in all I would say "Victory of the Daleks" is a good episode but there are others that are a tick better than this one. In the end, you are left with the question why Amy didn't know the Daleks and what everything has to do with the crack that appears again. And what are the plans of the Daleks now?

Season 5 Episode 2: The Beast Below
Summary:
The Doctor takes Amy into the future onto spaceship UK. The people of Earth had to flee from the planet because the solar flares have destroyed it and now every country travels on a ship through space. On board, the Doctor notices something strange and sends Amy after a little girl while he climbs down to the engine rooms. On a blocked road Amy finds a strange creature from the bottom of the ship but then she is made unconscious and brought into a voting booth. There, she finds out what the ship is all about but she chooses to forget what she has seen and records a message for herself to stop the Doctor from investigating. Together again, Amy and the Doctor fall into a gigantic mouth, which shows them there is really a beast below the city. Queen Elizabeth the tenth helps them to escape and brings them into her room. Some of her guards bring them into the Tower and there it gets clear that every ten years the Queen chooses to forget what they are doing to the star whale around whom the ship is build. The Doctor wants to kill the whale because that's the only way he sees to end the torturing of the creature but Amy chooses another way. Will she destroy the ship and everyone on board?
I think this is a lovely first travelling episode for Amy and the Doctor and I have to say it's a really cool setting. Who would have thought that a whole country could fit into a huge spaceship? I can imagine why the people choose to forget what they are doing to the star whale but they have never really thought about why the whale came to Earth and that it just wanted to be kind and nothing else. They didn't know and so they tortured him, so he would fly them through space. The decision of the Doctor to kill the whale must be a hard one but I really don't know why he thinks that the only good solution. Maybe he has to find this bit of humanity in him again before he can make other decisions but that's one of the reasons why he always picks up another companion to travel with. The Doctor always wants to solve the secrets behind a person and he somehow needs their human brains and emotions to be a better person. I'm glad that this episode ended well and that Amy is still travelling with the Doctor.

Season 5 Episode 1: The Eleventh Hour
Summary:
After his regeneration the Eleventh Doctor crashes with his Tardis in a garden. There he meets Amelia Pond, who has a scary crack in her wall. It seems like prisoner zero has escaped through the crack but the Doctor is able to close it. When he wants to investigate a strange door in Amelia's house, he gets distracted by noises from the Tardis and flies away with it after he has promised Amelia that he will be back in five minutes. The Doctor returns to the house with a rebuilding Tardis but he has been away twelve years and Amelia is now a grown woman and calls herself Amy. Together they find out that prisoner zero has been in the house all the time and now they try to catch him. Rory, Amy's boyfriend, tells them that he has seen coma patients all over the village and when an alien ship arrives the Doctor tries everything to help them detect the prisoner, which isn't that easy. When the aliens can't find the prisoner, they threaten to destroy the whole planet. With help from Amy and Rory, the Doctor is able to catch the alien. He gets a signal from the Tardis that she is ready and takes her for a ride but will he come back for Amy?
I think this episode is a great start for Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor because it has so much action in it and it's just fun to watch how the Doctor tries to find himself and at the same time tries to save the earth from the aliens who want to destroy it. The scenes with little Amelia at the beginning are just brilliant when they sit in the kitchen and the Doctor tries to find out what his favourite food is. I just love the interaction between them and it's nice to see little Amelia again from time to time. Amy is just brilliant when she tries to convince the Doctor that she's a police woman but she's a kissogram instead. In this episode, Rory seems to be a bit dumb but I'm glad that that changes later. The scene where we see all the other incarnations of the Doctor is brilliant and a great reminder who has been there before.
