Season 5 Episode 11: The Lodger
Summary:
Through a mysterious force the Tardis can't land and Amy is trapped inside it. The Doctor tries everything to find the source of this force and comes across a strange house. He becomes the new lodger of Craig Owens and tries to behave human but he's not very good at it. Meanwhile, people go up to the upper floor of the house but they never come back. Every time that happens there is a sort of time loop and Amy feels the forces inside the Tardis. The Doctor manages to fit into Craig's life and Craig starts to get jealous because Sophie, his friend whom he is in love with, seems to fancy the Doctor. When Craig wants the Doctor to leave, the Time Lord shows him what he is and why he is there and suddenly Craig understands why the man is so strange. Sophie is lured up the stairs as well and she shall be tested as a pilot for the spaceship that hides up there. When the Doctor enters, the ship thinks it has found the perfect pilot and tries to force the Doctor to help it. Can Craig save the planet before it explodes?
I like the character of Craig. He's a bit like a big Teddy bear and you just want to hug him all the time or slap him because he doesn't tell Sophie that he loves her. The Doctor seems to be quite fond of him too and it's just great to see their interaction. I guess Matt Smith has loved the football scenes where he was allowed to play again. It's also an interesting story with the Tardis not able to land and the Doctor has to rely on his intelligence and solve the problem without the technical gadgets he normally uses. The scene where he talks to the cat is also great and just typically for Eleven. We don't see a lot of Amy in this episode but I don't mind that. From time to time you just need an episode where the Doctor can act alone and the companion is more in the background. I enjoyed watching this episode and the moments between Craig and the Doctor are always fun.

Quotes from "Closing Time"
The Doctor: Oh, you've redecorated. I don't like it.
Craig Owens: It's a different house. We moved.
The Doctor: Yes, that's it.
Craig Owens: Doctor, what are you doing here?
The Doctor: Social call. Thought about time I'd try one out.
Craig Owens: I can't cope on my own with him. I can't... he just cries all the time. I mean, do they have off switches?
The Doctor: Human beings. No, I've checked.
Craig Owens: No, babies.
The Doctor: Same difference.
The Doctor: So what did you call him? Will I blush?
Craig Owens: No, we didn't call him "The Doctor."
The Doctor: No, I didn't think you would.
Craig Owens: He's called Alfie. What are you doing here, anyway?
The Doctor: Yes, he doesn't like Alfie. Personally he prefers to be called "Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All."
Craig Owens: Sorry, what?
The Doctor: That's what he calls himself.
Craig Owens: And how'd you know that?
The Doctor: I speak Baby.
Craig Owens: Of course you do.
The Doctor: Craig!
Craig Owens: What the hell are you doing here?
The Doctor: Oh, I'm the Doctor, I work in a shop now. Here to help. Look, they gave me a badge with my name on, in case I forget who I am. Very thoughtful, as that does happen.
The Doctor: You look awful.
Craig Owens: (about his baby son) I haven't slept, have I? I still can't stop him crying. I even tried singing to him last night.
The Doctor: Yeah, he did mention that... he thought you were crying, too.
The Doctor: Craig, take Alfie and go home.
Craig Owens: No.
The Doctor: No?
Craig Owens: No. I remember from last time, people got killed. People that didn't know you. I know where it's safest for me and Alfie, and that's right next to you.
The Doctor: Is that so?
Craig Owens: Yeah, you always win, you always survive.
The Doctor: Those were the days.
Craig Owens: Where am I investigating?
The Doctor: Well, look around. Ask questions. People like it when you're with a baby. Babies are sweet. People talk to you. That's why I usually take a human with me.
Craig Owens: So I'm your baby?
The Doctor: You're my baby.
Craig Owens: Doctor, listen to me. If the Cybermen are here, then we're not safe. We've got to go. We got to go back to base.
The Doctor: We've got a base? When did we get a base?
Craig Owens: I'm going down to the shop. We're out of milk. You know what to do if he cries.
The Doctor: No!
Craig Owens: Me neither!
The Doctor: (to the baby) Your dad's trying his best, you know. Yes, I know it's not his fault he doesn't have mammary glands. No, neither do I.
Craig Owens: The Cybermen. They blew up. I blew 'em up with love!
The Doctor: No, that's impossible. And also grossly sentimental and over-simplistic. You destroyed them because of the deeply-ingrained hereditary human trait to protect one's own genes, which in turn triggered a... uh... uh... yeah. Love.
Craig Owens: It's a different house. We moved.

Quotes from "The Lodger"
The Doctor: I'm the Doctor. Well, they call me the Doctor; don't know why. I call me the Doctor, too. I still don't know why.
The Doctor: Dry rot?
Craig: Or damp, or mildew.
The Doctor: Or none of the above.
Craig: I'll get someone to fix it.
The Doctor: No, I'll fix it. I'm good at fixing rot. Call me the Rotmeister. No, I'm the Doctor, don't call me the Rotmeister.
Craig: Why am I telling you this? I don't even know you.
The Doctor: Well, I've got one of those faces. People never stop blurting out their plans while I'm around.
Craig: Where did you learn to cook?
The Doctor: Paris, in the... 18th century. No, hang on, that's not recent, is it? 17th. No, no, no, no. 20th. Sorry, I'm not used to doing them in the right order.
Craig: Has anyone ever told you that you're a bit weird?
The Doctor: They never really stop.
Craig: Listen, Mike and I had an arrangement where if you ever need me out of your hair, just give me a shout, okay?.
The Doctor: Why would I want that?
Craig: Well in case you want to bring someone round, a girlfriend or a... boyfriend.
The Doctor: Oh, I will. I'll shout... If that happens. Something like... I was not expecting this!
The Doctor: All I've got to do is pass as an ordinary human being. Simple. What could possibly go wrong?
Amy: Have you seen you?
The Doctor: So you're just going to be snide? No helpful hints?
Amy: Hmm. Well, here's one... Bow tie, get rid!
The Doctor: Bow ties are cool. Come on, Amy. I'm a normal bloke. Tell me what normal blokes do.
Amy: They watch telly, they play football, they go down to the pub.
The Doctor: I could do those things. I don't, but I could.
The Doctor: I thought you might be in trouble.
Craig: Thanks. Oh, if I ever am, you can come and save me with my toothbrush.
Amy: Football. Okay, well done, that is normal.
The Doctor: Yeah, football, all outdoorsy. Now, football's the one with the sticks, isn't it?
Sean: You are so on the team! Next week, we've got The Crown and Anchor. We're gonna annihilate them!
The Doctor: Annihilate? No, no violence, do you understand me, not while I'm around? Not today, not ever. I'm the Doctor, the Oncoming Storm... and you basically meant beat them in a football match, didn't you?
Sean: Yeah.
The Doctor: Lovely. What sort of time?
The Doctor: Dry rot?
Craig: Or damp, or mildew.
